These two cuckoo marans chicks look almost exactly the same. One chick has slightly bigger wattles and comb. I'm thinking these are both cockerels, hoping they are both pullets! They are my only cuckoo marans--I don't have anything else to compare them to and I've looked at EVERYTHING online, and on some pictures I'm like, yep--roos, and on others I think, yep--pullets. They don't seem as light as some people's cockerels, yet don't seem as dark as other's pullets!

What do you think? Roos?

I've been holding out hope for these two. Well, if they are both roos--that's 6 of 9 chickens that are cockerels.

I think 2 is a cockerel. I use my leghorn cockerel as a reference, but I think leghorns mature quicker. 1 is tricky. Do they have a proud posture?

No, neither of them are posturing or chest bumping with the other young roos. Their posture and shape are very pullety, but they are still young at 7 weeks. It's the dang combs and wattles! I think the only way to be 100% sure is to wait for the crowing!

It is not pleasant having my thoughts confirmed on this subject! Argh.

I'll post more pictures in a week or two of chick #1.

Well, the chicks haven't changed in the last week. No comb or wattle growth in either one. Their shanks and feet color are changing. The were dark shanked with pinkish on their toes and bottoms of their feet. Now they seem to be turning yellow. Are they barred rocks? I think it could be possible that they are barred rocks (I was given a bunch of random chicks from a breeder that raises both barred rocks and cuckoo marans).

I'm reattaching a bigger version of one of the pictures above. This shows both pairs of feet, and I can see here that the lighter parts are already looking more yellow than pink. It's way more obvious this week.

So, if they are barred rocks...are they still looking like cockerels?
