7 year old suspended from school for shaping breakfast bar into "gun."

This is why more and more parents are homeschooling their children. The kids are getting in trouble over minor things instead of being taught what they go for. I pulled my three school age children out last year to homeschool and haven't regretted it at all. I am glad my kids are home where they can learn what they need and not worry about all of the other stuff happening.

Believe it or not there are children going to school all over the world that are not exposed to violence. There are some societies where there is still little if any television. There are many homes where private/ adult things are not discussed in front of the children. Where children are still protected and treated as children. I have worked in schools for many years and I can tell you there are schools where boys happily play football and girls with skipping ropes, fighting is absolutely non existant and the whole school ethos is to love and support each other. There are no smart mouths and the whole atmosphere is happy and industrious. I could take you into any primary school where I live and you would be enchanted by the little people there. In many societies children are untouched by the negative things of this world and I thank God for it.

I grew up in a small community with a school just like what you've discribed NewFoundLand ,........what I wouldn't give to raise my son up in that kind of school system .Unfortunatly that seems to be gone as is common sense within the school system .I look back at how things were and they were a lot better then ,then they are now .........which is trully sad seeing that we seem to think we've come so far ?????????

My kids schools wouldnt have done that. All kids there are children of soldiers so weapons is a every day thing with kids. Look outside on a decent day and you see some kids running on the playground near the woods with Nerf guns playing war or something like that. I don't think that even a gun logo on a shirt would be an issue. Some kids wear the parents unit shirts to school. Our school cares however how the kids clothes look. Holes and tears are a no go. Overly tight and revealing clothes are not allowed either.

For the very reason of the daily clothes dilemma, I am in favour of school uniforms which are universal here. No one can feel different and it levels the social hierarchy completely. It instills a sense of cohesion in much the same way as a regimental uniform. It is very easy to keep track of the children when out on a school trip. I'm not sure about tears or holes, I think a sense of perspective is needed here. Although I wouldn't want to see a child suffering from actual neglect, I see no harm in the wear and tear of daily play. Nothing is more endearing to me than the little ragamuffin, with his/her knee socks round his/her ankles and a grimy little face. It was the stuff of my childhood and long may it remain.

I am very anti school uniforms. It in its self goes against the basic principles our country was founded on. They seem to cost way more here than normal clothing too. Forced demand does bad things in our economy...

Not a fan of the "no holes" rules ether but for reference Newfoundland, Shotgun pants were normal here when I was in school. Not normal wear an tear. We shot those holes in them.

I don't hear much about school uniforms anymore. We always had very lax rules on our attire. There was only one girl that would dress in the "goth" style in my school. It raised eyebrows but none of the teachers seemed to care. One funny story was on Halloween when she came to school with her hair done, in a dress and had makeup on. Couldn't hardly recognize her, she looked real pretty. The one day other kids would dress up like monsters she looked ready for the prom. It was pretty good.

I too disagree with uniforms. My grade school age kids had to wear them. It cost me more to buy uniforms than to buy regular clothes. Plus you still have to buy everyday clothes on top of it. I had a hard time finding my kids sizes. You still know the poor kids from the rich kids by their shoes, their accessories, their demeanor, blah blah blah. All it does it make everyone wear the same thing. It takes individuality away from the children too.
The excuse that when they get a job they will have to wear a uniform is ridiculous because not everyone will work at a fast food place that requires uniforms and other jobs that do. My husband is self-employed, I am self-employed and we wear whatever we want

Back to the original post, I still think it is ridiculous the child was suspended for two days. Now this will be on his permanent record at school, the child is traumatized and it isn't like his little pastry could have done any harm!

Oh, I don't know about that. If it "went off" on someone, the filling might have stained another kid's uniform.

The local school system went with "uniforms" for the lower grades a couple of years ago. Basically, the dress codes specifies khaki or navy pants, and collared shirts in certain colors - though which colors is school-specific. Because of the odd colors at my daughter's school, I have had to do most of my shopping on the internet - those colors aren't likely to be found in the stores. Really good for the local economy, eh?
