7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Does this chicks abdomen look swollen? It was stuck in it's shell and I had to assist it out, there was a bunch of goop in there with it. I got it rinsed and I put neosporin on it's navel (which looks healed or mostly healed).

What do you all think?
The chick is still absorbing the yolk. It will be fine!

Like sally said, give the vitamins and electrolytes--Watch them for sticky butt because they hatched hard.

That's how all mine look when they first come out, especially if they had a big egg. HUGE belly. I'd say it looks normal.

Make sure they have good traction. Not newspaper. I like to use the most textured paper towels I can get. I also use the rubber shelf liner for the first few days. Or even a dish towel....
It can make the difference between spraddle legged or not. If one is questionable and is kept on a slippery surface, it will always get spraddled. If put on something with traction, it will usually get stronger and be able to keep his legs under him/her.

Thanks. I have a roll of the shelf liner and just put it in the cage. I'll be moving the chicks outside into their brooder in the morning - that has just a wire mesh to walk on.

Do you have any other pips? The malpositioned ones usually pip first if they pip at all. It's the time they normally would make an internal pip. So they do take longer to hatch from that first pip. I would wait until after any normal positioned ones hatch before thinking about helping. They are often stuck, not being able to turn, but as long as they can breathe, they need the time to absorb their yolk....

The upside down pip is the most recently pipped egg. So far, two have already hatched and 7 others that pipped first. Only two more that haven't pipped yet.

I will give this chick plenty of time before I consider assisting.

OH NO!!! One of my BCM eggs is pipped upside down!!

Watch it and let it go as long as possible. Hopefully it will get out on it's own but you may need to help.
Ughhhh, Out of my last hatch, they were all upside down. Two hatched by themselves, but I needed to assist 6 others. A few that didn't get pipped, died. You just really have to keep an eye on them.
That is not right!

I have had that happen with an old line Delaware hatch.

Again - very helpful/interesting. I had one pip really early (day 19) and no sign of movement since. Think it may be malpositioned and may have died in the shell (been pipped over 48 hours now). I didn't know pip timing could relate to poor positioning.

All of my black Silkies sport a little white on their chick down. Sometimes they have white bellies and look like little penguins, sometimes it'll just be a little white on their toe fuzz or a smudge on their face. They're so cute, I wish they'd keep their little white patches, but they don't. Your chicks are adorable!
Yup! They change color a lot. I had a chick hatch looking pure silver and one hatch looking like a warm brown color. Both grew out white and I can't tell them apart now. And, like you said the black ones always have some white/silver, then go full black.

It most likely just finished absorbing the yolk and should be fine. Interesting to see if it eats and drinks right away or takes its time.

Don't panic. Just give it time. I've had most hatch on their own and others needed help. But either way if it pipped on its own, you can get it to hatch!

Good point!!

I would take that one out and investigate ASAP.

I don't know what's up with my roosters.

I can leave here at midnight, at 2am at 4am, whatever time in the dark and they are always crowing. And it's dark in there I pull the garage door down...

They make me laugh.
