I haven't put any food in yet. I was going to introduce food when I moved them into the real brooder after they are drinking well inside. I attended a chick workshop last spring and they said pasty butt developed if food was introduced before the chicks were drinking well. I guess I'm not that concerned about eating right now because they just hatched and have the yolk-sac to nourish them for awhile

and a few zipping very slowly. I had several malpositioned chicks, not sure why, I lost a few already that didn't make it through the night

There are many reasons that pasty butt can happen.
 
Sometimes I use puppy pads in the brooder and as liners for the dog beds...

We have this ice cream joint here that has been around since the 50's and STILL makes ALL their own icecream HOMEMADE THE OLD FASHIONED WAY!

I had a REAL Banana Split.
It was HUGE
By real I mean REAL icecream with Strawberry Chocolate and Vanilla icecream
NOT Vanilla icecream with flavored syrups
