7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

I am in. I will be setting 8 Australorps, 8 Buff Orpingtons, 8 EEs, and 4 BCMS on either the 11th or 12th.

Since "set all the eggs" doesn't specify what type, I'm setting alligator eggs. :-D
Okay, it did encourage me to go ahead, and set some chicken eggs too. Unfortunately, I psyched myself out while posting about what chicken eggs I was going to hatch.

You will have a great looking egg basket!

Welcome, I have added you to the members list.

Anyone familiar with Edgar Allen Poe? I have "The Tell-Tale Heart" running through my head. I am nervous! Very very dreadfully nervous! But no one here would call me mad. This disease has sharpened my senses! I hear peeping and chirping and ... Seriously. I am already ready for these eggs to hatch! I should have just set them two weeks ago when I got these ducks!

As long as you didn't stick the eggs under your floorboards I think you're fine.

That happens to me too! I am so disappointed when I run to the incubator and realize it was a bird outside tweeting....

We have cold here too, built a good size brooder (3' X 5') raised and enclosed for the garage. two heat lamps mounted outside and shining through some hardware cloth, and a 100 watt bulb mounted on top inside. works for raising 6-8 chicks to 8 weeks at an average overnight temp of zero. then i move them to the coop, segregated by some hardware cloth for two or three weeks and they do just fine. brooder is closed on three sides, hardware cloth on front and top, cut and fitted some styro insulation to fit over the hardware cloth if needed, but usually full open after week two.

Well, if those in Canada can do it, maybe this Michigander can try too! Just not so sure it will be this year.

I am in zone 5a, eastern Ontario. Is there anyone here who is in a similar zone, and uses Premier1 chick heating plate(s) for outdoor (or in coop/barn) brooding? I would love to hear your experience, particularly whether water stayed de-iced under them.
