7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Sorry I missed this : ). I got them from a breeder in Washington that I have gotten many many eggs from. She has an ad on Craigslist.

How far north?? I don't think I see the post.
I love seeing all the silkies and silkie babies, I just love them!!!

I just added one more egg yesterday... Bator is hold steady around 100 degrees and humidity around 30%, not bad for an unheated room and constant downpour outside!

That's what I'm doing too. My temps are pretty consistent despite the cold house during the day.
Trying REAL hard not to candle my eggs until at least day five

ron! We are getting that storm! It did snow some last Friday night, but this one is huge. Is going to snow for two more days after this! It will be tough getting around, here and on the roads, but we need this!

We have to shovel a path for our doggies. A Dachshund and
a Scnoodle. :)

We need to do something better than tarps, our poor chickies
have snow in their run. :(

Open the front door to this. Need to do some shoveling in the front
now.

It is pretty though..can you see that it's still coming down?
Soo Purdy!

Snow and all..I got a new layer today! I was hoping for a green .. :(

Not a bad sized egg for a beginner. Hope it stays this way, her mom was laid big eggs.
Congrats on the new layer :)

It's easier than chickens I think.
This will be my first round hatching them though.
Cages you should probably build yourself as they can be expensive.
I am using a 3 pen rabbit hutch I got for free off Craigslist.
It's about 4-6 sq. ft each pen.
I didn't build it, or it would have been wired for eggs to roll out, course it was for rabbits.
I'm lazy, so I didn't rewire it.
Feed efficiency is all about keeping it in the feeder.
Seriously.
They fling their heads when eating, So I place their feeders inside a Jug/Bucket with holes cut in the side.
They have to stick their whole heads in there, IF you don't do this,
You will probably be wasting over 50% feed. As long as feed isn't being wasted, they are very efficient.

Enclosed areas are fine, but you'll want I hear 14 hr light cycles to stimulate laying.
I hear over 16 hour cycles they can sometimes become aggressive and fight/kill one another.
I did this with a $4 Indoor timer(which has been working outside for months) and a salvaged refrigerator light socket.

I hope your hatch rate is OVER 9 THOUSAND!

I do have a couple rabbit cages that I couldn't bring myself to throw away. I might have to look into it more. Do they take heat well? I like your adaptation to the egg rack.
I'd be happy with 75% lol

I candled a few eggs and I see some veins in about half so far. I think I have at least one actual clear eggs. There's no dark mass at all. Which makes me a tad sad because it's the wrinkly egg and I really wanted it to hatch. Wahhhhhh

Am I the only person who sees green eggs on JandT's egg pic?

They looked green to me too...

The egg carton is white right?
Am I crazy.
Wait...dont answer that

Bama, I think you passed crazy a very long time ago... :gig

But on this, I have to agree with you... carton looks white and eggs look green...
