7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

I haven't encountered the "pasty butt" yet and I'm hoping to keep it that way...lol.

I started feed on the paper towel for the different chicks I hatched last year (but I'm new to this, so just know that) I find their aim is off anyways the first day...but it seems to help them get onto eating quicker and my EE's are vigorous to say the least...and they want the food! They're busy picking at things anyway...they might as well start eating is what I thought. I kept an EE in the bator for a portion of the day because I was combining and didn't have the time for him. Was he thirsty when I introduced him to water! I was surprised. For me, it just works to take the chicks out of the bator fairly soon and feed/water them.

I haven't put any food in yet. I was going to introduce food when I moved them into the real brooder after they are drinking well inside. I attended a chick workshop last spring and they said pasty butt developed if food was introduced before the chicks were drinking well. I guess I'm not that concerned about eating right now because they just hatched and have the yolk-sac to nourish them for awhile

Quick lesson on pasty butt.....

Pasty butt can come from incubation stress, or its worse when you get chicks shipped. It can also be caused by keeping the chicks too warm and they dont have a place to get out of the heat, so be sure your heat is at a corner only in the brooder and the other end is cool, or they might even need more protein in their feed. Are you feeding chick food? They do well with a momma hen because they get good bacteria in their gutts from peckin at mommas poo and at the ground believe it or not. This is why I like to use those pre/pro biotic vits I posted again a few posts before. post #10400

We always have to monitor our chicks for the first week daily, I dont do so much after that unless I see issues the first week. Serama are tough cause they have that uptilted butt and their poo automatically gets hung all there. You have to be careful as I am sure you know since yours are a few days old now, not to mistake the butt hole with the umbilical and tear a slit open at the umbilical. If I cant gently pick it off their bum I run their tush under warm drizzle of water under the sink and dry them off with a paper towel and fluff them up. if I have to cut some feathers off I will. Never put a red or bloody chick back with other chicks, use blue coat spray or keep them separate.

You can get a little plain yogurt, mixed in their chick starter and even mash up a hard boiled egg yolk for them too. but again I suggest the either the acv or like I do the pre/pro vits the first 2 weeks and then switch to the acv.....

ACV= apple cider vinegar WITH MOTHER
Mix 1 oz (2 Tbs) of ACV per gallon of water or free-choice at 50:50 with water in a plastic waterer or pan. ACV will corrode metal waterers. EDIT (with the free choice and chicks, I would remove when these symptoms disappear and add to water)

GROW GEL / FEED Newly hatched chick!

WHY I always add little soda caps full of grow gel when my first chick is fluffed in the incubator.
Does it do anything? I thought they had the yolk!
Read PAGE 6 http://www.thepoultrysite.com/focus/contents/ceva/OnlineBulletins/ob_2007/Article-No12-May07.pdf
. Studies have demonstrated an interaction between the time of hatching and the time until the chick has access to food and water [15], [42]. In commercial settings, hatched chicks are removed from the incubator only at a point when most eggs have already hatched, leading to differences in the time from hatching to feeding. Early hatchers thus spend longer time in the sub-optimal hatcher environment, and this also affects them differently than late hatchers when it comes to post hatch growth development [15]

Note: Just because we Know chicks can live off of yolk for up 48-72 hours does NOT mean its BEST for them!
