Do you sell adult birds?
No, the BQO do not go feral at all. I can't IMAGINE anyone saying the BQO are more wild than the other South Americans. I know people with BQO and we ALL are in love with their personalities. I think it was Yashar that wrote that about them being a little wild, and he wrote that a looooooong time ago. I'm not even sure he would say that anymore! (Hopefully he'll chime in!) Now, the Huastecs are a tad wild - they stick around but only will sleep in trees and highly resent being told to do otherwise! I've never had any South American go feral. I think when people say "wild" they mean behavior - like spazzy. BQO are very calm and not the slightest bit spazzy. Huastec hens are nippy and tough. My one Huastec roo was so terribly aggressive I had to rehome him. BQO roos are lapdogs, sweet and trustworthy. I can't really speak to foxes. I have tons of coyotes here and I have never lost a South American to a coyote. We may have foxes at night when I don't see them, but my coop is seriously Fort Knox at night, and everyone is locked in, so nothing has a chance anyway. My birds free range during the day and hawks are a HUGE HUGE HUGE issue. I've never lost a BQO ADULT to a hawk - young juveniles, but no adults. BQO are really easy to keep.Hi Ma Mama, thank you for replying. Would they also be able to evade foxes? Is there a tendency for them to go feral, because I've read they are more wild than some other South American breeds. I plan to make modifications to the barn, or build a cote.
I don't have Huastec anymore. I got sick of fishing them out of the trees every night. I gave the Huastec to a friend. The Huastecs are beautiful, and another consideration. I don't want them to sleep in the trees though, but they must do ok, or you wouldn't have them anymore. The South American breed I choose has to be very good at evading predators, because the foxes here hunt during the day in the spring. Could be a mom feeding a litter of kits. They have watched and waited for me to go inside, then struck. I know that there are breeds that will survive in my free range area, as I know a previous home owner had bantams who went feral and lived in the marsh.
Thanks for taking the time with the information. I love lapdog roosters.
Ma Mama,
Do you have any of the other SA breeds? or know of any breeders who got any of Yashar's Koro Sea chickens?
The Black Quechua Olmecs are awesome
