Hi. I just received an order last week for 6 Blue Ameraucana chicks. I noticed yesterday that one of them has funky "thumbs". The first digit on each foot, the short ones which usually point toward the chick's butt, are (on this bird) each pointing ahead of the opposite foot. Has anyone seen this before? Any info or guesses whether it's genetic, or a product of incubation conditions, or something else?
It doesn't seem to bother the bird, who otherwise seems quite energetic, mobile, hungry and happy. I am concerned that if these thumbs stay in this orientation, she(?) won't be able to grip a perch while sleeping, and he(?) could have trouble with mating.
I think I can rule out trauma (both thumbs affected, no evidence of discomfort) and brooder conditions (pine shavings, towel under the water bowl, I've provided a chick scale perch for practice..).
I will breed this chick - these six are the founders of a three clan breeding system, and I need her diversity more than I need to cull a possible "funky thumb" gene, right now. I will select against this in the next generations - if all her chicks present the same, I'll know its genetic and I'll cull the clan. If some present it but not all, I'll document the variables as best I can and try to breed it out of her clan. If none of her descendants present this way, I'll know it isn't genetic.

Anyway, I'm here to find out if anyone knows what's going on with this chick's feet - and if this is something I should stress over.

Ok.. I figured out that this condition is called "duckfoot". It's a definite disqualification in show birds. Some say that this bird should not be allowed to breed (suggesting a genetic basis), others say that incubation temperature and humidity, and also nutritional deficits with the mother hen, can cause various foot deformities. I guess I won't know what I think until I see her hatch some chicks.

What I CAN do is build her an ADA (Ameraucanas with Disabilities Act) compliant roosting bar - two parallel bars, with maybe 1 bar's diameter of spacing between, so she can roost on the rear one and lean forward onto the other one.

One more question: I bought six Blue chicks. I got 2 that I'm sure are black, 3 that I'm sure are blue, and this one, who is noticeably lighter than the three, but not so light that I can confidently call her splash. She's the one standing on the perch in the first photo, the flash kind of washed her out in the second photo. Does anyone have an opinion (blue or splash) based on her color in the first photo or her leg/foot pigmentation in the third photo?
