I called the hatchery yesterday. They said it sounded like cocci and gave me the phone number to a Dr. Brown that does phone consultations.
My chicks are looking much better today. One is still weak but looks much better than it did yesterday. We are going to move them outside and put sand in the brooder.
I would have to say no,to cocci in day old chicks,if they are over a week, then yes it is possible. As for hens killing chicks, this happens more often that people realize, Not all hens make good mothers,i would be cautious next time and monitor hens carefully. As for chicks with slimy stuff, could it be residue from hatching? Have you wiped beak off,did it come back? Any discharge from eyes/nostrils. You could give some electrolytes and vitamins. Try adding warm water to feed(so the consistency is like oatmeal)most chicks love this. If feeding anything other than chick feed, they need grit. Keep her warm.Would you get cocci in day old chicks? The hens are killing chicks and I've been told its because something is wrong with them. Only some chicks where killed/attacked on the day they hatched. I took 3 (all on different times) 1 wasn't eating by itself so it died after a week. Another's injury was so severe it died the same day but I noticed it had slimy saliva type liquid in its beak. So I thought yeast infection. The one I currently have also has the slimy stuff.. Also runny poo wich is expected as they haven't eaten.
