911 help please!

Ampersat-did you get the crop problem fixed?

All our chicks are good now. We moved all the healthy ones outside into the run and cleaned the coop. Put sand down instead of pine shavings. They stayed outside all afternoon and seemed to love it. The 4 we had corralled seem to be back to normal so we put them back with the flock. Seems like we're out of the woods (I hope). Hoping the sand keeps things cleaner.

What an introduction to chicken keeping!

Well that
I called the hatchery yesterday. They said it sounded like cocci and gave me the phone number to a Dr. Brown that does phone consultations.
My chicks are looking much better today. One is still weak but looks much better than it did yesterday. We are going to move them outside and put sand in the brooder.

Well that sounds better than mareks I guess. Im glad they seem better today! I hope the move helps :)

So glad things are going well and that you didn't lose them all! I did get the crop worked out. We had a way easier time of it than you did! Last night we massaged her upside down and nothing came out. We forced water in her with a syringe. By the time we went to bed she was doing so much better but still bloated in the crop. In the morning we read up more and really expected to go try the massage again and then have to cull her after a few days but when we went to get her it was completely back down to normal and so far she's acting like nothing ever happened! So we did the happy chicken dance!

LOL...that part is true, we're nerds! We were just so happy we didn't have to cull one in the first month ever of chicken rearing!

That's great! I'm glad your girl is better. Geez Louise what a crazy last couple of days! Can I admit that tonight at 5:30 was the first shower I had since Wednesday morning?! Looking forward to life returning to normal. I feel like now I can go into the coop alone again, before I was too scared of what I was going to find. I made my husband go first. Ummm...maybe I'm not cut out to be a farmer. I know it's totally wimpy but I was traumatized seeing that poor chick on its back with the legs straight out. It was a pretty gruesome sight, almost worse than a dead one.
Anyway, thanks to everyone's advice and encouragement. If I knew how to make a huggy chicken icon I would!

Would you get cocci in day old chicks? The hens are killing chicks and I've been told its because something is wrong with them. Only some chicks where killed/attacked on the day they hatched. I took 3 (all on different times) 1 wasn't eating by itself so it died after a week. Another's injury was so severe it died the same day but I noticed it had slimy saliva type liquid in its beak. So I thought yeast infection. The one I currently have also has the slimy stuff.. Also runny poo wich is expected as they haven't eaten.

Oh wow, zeeanimallady, I don't know. That sounds horrible. I'm a newbie so I wouldn't know how to answer your question. You might want to start a new thread since this one is kind of old. People might not read through it all but I want your question to get answered! Good luck!

I would have to say no,to cocci in day old chicks,if they are over a week, then yes it is possible. As for hens killing chicks, this happens more often that people realize, Not all hens make good mothers,i would be cautious next time and monitor hens carefully. As for chicks with slimy stuff, could it be residue from hatching? Have you wiped beak off,did it come back? Any discharge from eyes/nostrils. You could give some electrolytes and vitamins. Try adding warm water to feed(so the consistency is like oatmeal)most chicks love this. If feeding anything other than chick feed, they need grit. Keep her warm.
