9th-annual-byc-new-years-day-2018-hatch-a-long

Well my official final numbers: 7 eggs made it to lockdown (2 Brahma/maran mix chicken eggs & 5 out of 11 shipped guinea eggs) and 2 of my chickens' eggs hatched on Jan 1! One Buff Brahma/maran & one Dk Brahma/maran. No luck on shipped eggs (advertised as parents fed organic feed & given supplements) so nutrition doesn't seem to be a factor! Oh well, I forgot to enter a number for the hatch contest. I did enter the beautiful egg contest! My hens just started laying, beautiful color! One was solid color pinkish tan and the other similar color with speckles! But they had some fierce competition! My favorite in the contest is (one of the winners)the unique Gold Quail egg! Brahmas mature slow. I was surprised the eggs were as big as they were and I'm so happy they hatched! I've had my standard brahmas first eggs be pickle size the first year and then get regular size the next. First time I ever had Giant Brahmas! Will be trying for 100% Giant Brahmas for the next hatch.
:hitim sorry you lost some this hatch.
I had been having issues with shpped eggs. The person i buy from changed to USPS instead of UPS and all but one made the trip this time(the past two we lost 20-35 eggs in shippijg and then another 20 didnt take in incubating)
So fingers crossed on this 117 that just went in.
The post office had a tag on the box saying eggs. And when ups delivery gets hrre they ghand it tonyou all sideways and you hear them digging it out of the bottom of the truck lol
Im sure usps cost more but so far they handled them the best:confused:

What are we supposed to submit for the contest? A pic where you can count them all?

I set 25 in bator and 5 under my hen. Had one blood ring prior to 10 day candle. Have 29 healthy chicks!
Thanks!
I added your numbers to the spreadsheet. So far you are in first place!

May be splayed leg? I had to use a band-aid on one of my chicks on a previous hatch. Cut it in half horizontally, found the instructions here on BYC. It was fine in a couple of days, but you have to do it-the sooner the better. You have to keep checking the Band-Aid to make sure it's not to tight. I had flexible band-aids so it worked perfect. The width of their legs grow so fast, you don't want to cut off the circulation.

Actually..I Think i may have unknowingly hurt it. During hatch, one of my white eggs was zipped half way around..but the membrane was dry. I pulled the shell top apart,it started wiggling out, so i put it back in. The back of it's leg, the joint, has a scab. I think the skin/feathers got pulled off. It's healing fine on it's own,it was eating and drinking after 24hrs so i left it be.chicks are 5-7 days old, it balances great on one leg, but uses it more and more. I suspect a full recovery in a couple weeks.
