I am sure you are getting the correct stuff as advertised in the add you posted.

Each time someone cuts it down in smaller packages, it gets more expensive per pound. Some are just gouging people.

You can buy Food Grade DE for between 25 and 40 dollars for a 50 # bag depending on where you live. It sound like you found a source that is in the ball park and Permaguard is the major supplier of DE. Are you having it shipped, Does that include shipping? Like mentioned 50# is lots and lots of DE. It will store and you will need a air tight container. I bought a LARGE Plastic Storage Tote. If space is a problem you may be better off to buy a smaller amount even though it is more per pound. I was able to buy 50 lbs at my feed store for $ 25.00 but they don't have it any longer and could not find a source. Shipping does make it more expensive.

The thing about DE is that it is great for bugs. Especially ants. Sprinkle in the hill. I am pleged right now with ants and I am using bunches of it on the acreage to annilate those nasty things.

If you think you have to much when you get it you may want to make some available to others on the board by sending out smaller packs. That is how I got my last batch. A lady bought a bag and split the cost of the DE and I paid her the price of the DE and shipping and I still got it for less than I would have paid at some of the sites selling smaller amounts. She basically filled a Flat Rate Priority Box with Several Bags of DE.

Now that I look at the website, it was $25 for a 50 pound bag, and shipping was about $25 also.

I ordered from earthworks.citymax.com and recieved my DE about 6 days after I ordered. It came VIA UPS in a box with the 50 pound bag inside, LOL.

I can't say enough good stuff about it. My little girl was getting 5-7 ticks a WEEK and since we spread the DE, not a single one. It also took care of the stubborn anthill in the side yard.

Has anyone used DE for Flies?

I have a sweet little horse, who has had previous issues with flies, they were so bad they laid eggs in her face. It messed up her eye lids, and now her tears just run down her face, which attracts the flies even MORE.
I just saw her today (she is boarding at a ranch out of town) anyway, her eyes are bloodshot and there were flies EVERYWHERE!!! NASTY....

I ordered some DE, in case I can't find any nearby (thanks 4H kids and Mom) I only got a small bag as shipping was pretty high.
Anyway, just looking for good stories, and if I put the DE directly ON her face will that too mess with her eyes or will it be OK?

Edit to add: Whats the easiest or best way to apply on an animal, and on the ground?

Chelly...keep it away from and out of her eyes. It's harmless if touched or eaten, but *is* an eye irritant.

Something you can try though...if the horse doesn't sweat too much or at all, buy a tube of Off, and put a small dab on your fingertip and rub it around the eye about an inch or two away from the eye. Buy the waterproof kind (I think there's a waterproof kind) so it'll stay on the horse most of the day. We do this with our dogs too at night, to keep the mosquitos off of them (mosquitos carry heartworms and my moms dog got it a few months ago).

Yes, you have to watch breathing it in, and eyes, as it is basically finely cut up shells, so can be very irritating.

As far as being in eggs, I know several websites that have people that drink/eat it regularly for "people deworming or cleanse" as well so no, its not harmful to animals OR people. I havent tried it myself, but love it on my critters! It DOES work!

I found a 50 pound bag at the local feed store - $20.95 what a BARGAIN!
I took the whole bag to the ranch, used a big bucket full - I spread it over all the poop mounds I could find, I puffed some on the horses legs, in the barn and stalls - too me like 2 hours and BOY was it HOT out there - my face is ALL red, my skin got super dry - my hair got crispy! (I wet my hair at one point, and I think the DE got on the wet hair!)

I will report back on the sucess of my afternoon adventure. I won't go back to the ranch till next weekend, but the owner and ranch hand will let me know!

I washed out Rosies eyes, and put some more steroid cream in them, having a vet come out tomorrow to check her out - her one eye looks REALLY bad.
