I work M-F 6AM until 2 PM, can't take my phone into the prison where I work. Please leave a message..... THANKS

Anyone Biel owners living near Steve who can help him out?

I'm sorry I don't live closer to you, Steve. My Biel cockerels are younger than what you're looking for, but they're very healthy and I've got quite a few of them. I would've loved to re-home one, but I'm not comfortable shipping chicks through the mail. I hope someone here can prove of greater help to you.

Hi DesertChic - I don't like chicks/eggs shipped in the mail either but I've had 10 to 12 week old juvies shipped from East Coast VT to West Coast CA overnight and the pullets were fine - especially being companions as two to one box. They come out of the box blinking their eyes and wary about their new surrounding but are no worse for wear and we just open the box in a quarantine indoor kennel and let them come out on their own to explore and find feed and water. I've done this twice and am expecting a 3rd shipment of 2 juvies from CO to CA this Spring. The main thing is to notify your mail route driver(s) of the expected live bird shipment and to CALL you for pickup at the P.O. I have my breeders write "CALL CUSTOMER FOR PICKUP (626) XXX-XXXX in big marker on the outside of the shipping box and there's been no problem.

I've been wondering if anyone here has had a Biele hen go broody.
Another question does anyone have Barred Rocks and Bieles together. I may be getting some purebred rocks and was curious how they would get along. Anyone have thoughts or opinions?

I never had Bielies but have had RIR, BR, Dom, Leg, NHR, and Marans and these are dominant breeds. Not necessarily unfriendly to humans but if they can get away with it they will lord it over gentler or bantam flockmates if there's not enough space for the breeds to break up into their own little clique groups. I had to re-home Legs and Marans because they were vicious bullies to the gentler smaller breeds in our little free-range backyard. I've had BRs and Doms and prefer the lighterweight Doms just because they are very active foragers making other breeds look lazy plus they're easier on the feed bill.

As to your Bielies I would think their sheer size would intimidate BRs but then I couldn't say since I've not had a Bielie before. I understand Bielies have a gentle demeanor. I currently have a gentle and kind 2 y/o APA Ameraucana who is twice the size of her Silkie flockmates and the little Silkies chest bump her but she respectfully allows them the privilege without harming them in return.

Hey, as long as its not tumorous/cancerous, maybe you can create a new breed -- something like the Penes with their Coronation/King's comb.  I mean if anomalies like short legged genes became a breed maybe a new comb can become a new breed (provided it looks good and isn't harmful to the chicken).  Have any Bielie hens been hatched with this comb anomaly?

Is your rooster a 2013 import? I guess you've read the other post. I'm thinking it's a common thing now but hard to say with a rare bird. Does it look like it should be there like on my rooster? The hens

i've hatched are young so noon here. I have 2 cockerals so we will see if they have it. Pam

I have run my Bielefelders in a free range situation with several different breeds. While one of my Biele roosters is King of the Flock, he is not a bully in any way, and tolerates all subordinate roosters. He treats hens from all breeds very kindly. The hens are all quite gentle, they seem to hold their own, but not bother anyone. From my experience, you could run any kind of chicken with the Bieles- they are the best when it comes to temperament.

Thank ya'll for your input. I think I'll carry on with my plans then. For me the Bieles are still a trial run to see how they work out as a dual purpose free range bird. I don't want to miss the opportunity to get the rocks and lose a year on the Bieles if they don't work out.

Just watch them. My cream legbars were beating up on my bieles for a long time, and they still do it from time to time, despite the huge difference in size. After a winter together, they seem to get along pretty well, but the legbars still get the food first and the best spots on the roost.
