Finally got my Biels!!! Roo and one of my girls here with the Ameraucanas. I'm wondering when the "calm demeanor" kicks in, cause right now they are very jumpy!!

Mine were pretty calm right from hatch, but right around 4 weeks of age they calmed even more and grew very snuggley. Now at 7 weeks they're amazingly sweet, friendly and absolutely love to be cuddled and pet...and most of mine are cockerels!

Mine were pretty jumpy as very young chicks too. They really settled down and became calmer and sweeter around 4-5 weeks.

That's true! My boys were very standoffish until this week (5 weeks old), when suddenly they want to snuggle on my arm or knee for 30 minutes every morning. My pullet has been calm from the beginning.

I love these birds.

My 9 Biele chicks are definitely more active than the Orps I'm accustomed to, BUT when I do handle them individually, they settle down a little more quickly than the Orps do, and seem to like the individual attention. I'm glad to see confirmation that they'll likely settle down more in another few weeks. They are cute little buggers, to be sure!

Just wondering how many pure bielefelders are really out there ? I read accounts of people mixing in other breeds early on to increase the number of eggs/chicks they could sell. I just bought two batches of eggs this spring to hatch and there is a lot of variability in the chicks... Would love to hear from the experts on this. I had one cockerel that was beautiful, growing fast, perfect markings but he just fell over dead one day.. Had 2 pullets die unexpectedly as well. I've never really lost chicks like this before... Maybe lucky up to now. Anyone else see this with their chicks? Anyway, i hope my chicks are reasonably pure and hope they produce as advertised...

That's weird... I've actually heard people describe Bieles as their smartest birds. I've got a pullet and few roos in the breeder- so far their very calm, inquisitive, and have a thoughtful look to them. The Rhodebars, by contrast, are NUTS.

Wow. My experience with them has been awesome. They are my favorite by far. Good layers, great disposition, and have consistently paid the feed bill with eggs and chicks. I highly recommend them to people wanting low maintenance birds that lay huge eggs and beautiful to boot.
