A Bielefelder Thread !

Wow, Master of Hounds, way cool! I'm an AKC judge and I do the Non-Sporting group as well as about a third of the Toy group. I've also judged ARBA (American Rare Breed Association) and I'm thinking about applying to judge at Internationals shows. At times, it keeps me pretty busy, but we no longer breed dogs (just have one Lowchen) so that frees up time for "the girls"!!!

Sorry about the "b" word, folks! I've been in dogs for so long that I forget it has any other meaning other than a female dog!!!! SORRY!!!!!

And here's the first three of the four Bielefelder over Buff Silkie chicks. (Bosch, pictured above, is the sire.) I can honestly say that the Biel blood seems to have improved their personalities, as these chicks are much calmer, quieter and friendlier than the pure Silkies I've bred. And as you can see in the second photo, a hint of the Bielefelder "chipmunk" stripe is just perceptible on their backs.
These guys are SO cute! So, you have your biel cockerel with bantams? I'd buy these chicks in a heartbeat. I love the bielefelder temperament.

I wish our club would have joined AKC when we had the opportunity. I could have also been grandfathered in based on my experience and been licensed in AKC for all the coonhound breeds. I was so busy then it just wasn't something I had time to pursue.

Except for when I'm doing specific breeding groups, all of my birds free range together. I heard my lone Buff Silkie hen making a fuss one morning and saw my beloved Bosch mating with her. Up until that day she and the rest of my "layer" flock had been isolated in their own run, so when her eggs turned up fertile, I knew who the daddy was. (She won't let any of the other cockerels near her, including my breeding Biel, Hansel, who she chased across the yard in a fury when he tried to mate with her.) I can't wait to see what these babies develop into!

I had previously allowed my Barred Rock cockerel mate with my Silkie and got some interesting birds out of it. Here are the pullet and cockerel that came out of that cross:

They're both larger than bantam, but not quite as big as my large breeds.

I have just gotten 2, 2 month old hens, I am delighted with them. Know nothing about them kept they are fluffy from Germany of the same name. I had a pet chicken as a child so big learning curve for me but had this indoor/outdoor coop made and here I go! Any suggestions would be appreciated. No rooster and not wanted.

One girl starting laying at a bit over 5 months. Her first egg is plain and her second egg is the one with spots. I think she will stop laying and then start again later on, so im not going to switch the feed to layer yet. Oh and they weighed 48g and 46g and she laid both in 3 days.
