A Bielefelder Thread !

Pics
While the cat was away.....the mice discovered rare breed auctions and purchased 4 Bielfelders! Two pullets and two cockerels but the cold weather has prevented shipping so I must be patient:)
Anyway, am looking forward to enjoying this breed and am really appreciating this thread!

I have some bielefelder chicks hatching today! Only one pip so far. Hopefully I didn't mess up the humidity and I can share some pics later!

Here's hoping you have a great hatch! I am a worrier when I see that first pip but no others. I am sure that it will all be ok.

I can't wait to start hatching Bielefelders this year. Right now it is way too cold to collect eggs. Last night it was 3 degrees. Eggs freeze very fast. Spring needs to come quickly as these snow storms are getting a little old by now.

We are lucky here in Texas, we get to start early!

I am hoping things go well. I candled them as I moved them from the turner into the incubator I use for hatching and all of them were alive at that point! It is really dry from running the heater so much lately though and I let it dry out a few times. This circulated air model dries out way faster than the old ones I used.

I had not the foggiest idea 1 way or the other. So I googled it. According to my pet chicken it isn't. A list of all breeds recognized by the APA. Maybe in a couple years once they are more widely established in the US, they will recognize them. Not that I care 1 way or the other. I think they are beautiful birds. I wished they didn't cost so much.

Wow - a pretty short list considering there are 400+ breeds in the world. Guess it takes a while for breeders to get rare birds and rarer still to get their breed recognized, Wish I had the space and the zone to carry on breeding programs. Some neat birds like Breda, Sulmtaler, Pyncheon, etc, haven't even made it to this list yet. I never knew Easter Eggers were accepted as an APA breed?

Not sure where they got their list from but the official list can be found at http://www.amerpoultryassn.com/PDF Forms/APA Recognized Breeds and Varieties Sept2012.pdf .

Like I said, that was what I found when I googled it. Shortly below my original post, someone pointed out an old breed that has long been recognized that wasn't on the list. I can care less what the APA recognizes or doesn't. I just get birds that I like. I have some cross breeds that I love! They will never be recognized by the APA, like I care!! Bielefelder crosses are what I am talking about. I have some Bielefelder roo over Black Sex Link hens, they are the gentlest and sweetest pullets that I have.
