A Bielefelder Thread !

Those roosters are beautiful! Really beautiful! For me, the temperament is most important, so Bieles quickly made the short list of breeds I must try. What one can't see in the photos is the SIZE. These gentle giants are amazing. I have eggs in my incubator right now. I am hoping for a roo.

Do you know Max and Moritz by Wilhelm Busch?

To most people who have leisure
Raising poultry gives great pleasure:
First, because the eggs they lay us
For the care we take repay us;
Secondly, that now and then
We can dine on roasted hen;
Thirdly, of the hen's and goose's
Feathers men make various uses.
Some folks like to rest their heads
In the night on feather beds.
One of these was Widow Tibbets,
Whom the cut you see exhibits.
Hens were hers in number three,
And a cock of majesty.

I don't know why we in Germany consider Wilhem Busch a writer of Children Books... maybe b/c he wrote in the same style like Heinrich Hoffmann who's Struwelpeter is, well, the most German of all Children Books, I think. If you don't know them, google.. and yes, I had to memorize both books as a child and no, I never suck my thumb or went even near matches....
and for me a rooster is still one of the beautiful and majestic animals out there. Taking all their pride from caring for their hens, who are a synonym for diligence and usefullness, at least in German.

Am I the only one with a Biele rooster with an attitude?
I mean, this guy may end up in the freezer and I've dealt with some really nasty little SOB bantam Cochin roosters.

On another note...
I candled the 11 Biele eggs I set last week. The one badly cracked one and another blood ringed. One was clear. I have 8 still developing. They may not be laying regularly but the boys are doing their jobs for when the girls do lay!
I only had 3 eggs laid in the last week. They went in the 'bator. While I am aware it's still winter and the weather can't decide if we are in winter, fall, spring or even summer, since these girls are 8-9 months old and under light 15hrs a day, I expected a bit of regularity in their laying by now. I mean, they started a month or more ago. I only have the three girls, so I am not expecting three eggs a day, but at least one a day would be awesome!

Oh Bine, that is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing it!!!!

I just put 24 eggs in the incubator last night, including 5 from my Biel girls and a few from my other breeds that may have been fertilized by at least one of my Biel roosters. I honestly don't know if I'll get any pure Biels from this hatch or not since everybody has been free-ranging (and mating) together but there is a chance. Hansel, my biggest boy and great flock uniter, has been favoring two of the Biel girls while Bosch, my meatier lap rooster, has favored the other. But...my Ameraucana mix and largest Naked Neck has gotten in with the girls a few times, so it could be an interesting mix.

Shiloh - my big NN

Copper, my Ameraucana boy

For the first time today my Biel boys "fought" one another....over a girl. I have to say, their fights are pretty low-key compared to my other guys around here. They mainly stared each other down with their neck feathers fluffed out while my EE cockerel ran back and forth between them squawking as if to egg them on (no pun intended). Eventually the EE ran straight into Bosch, the smaller of the two Biels, and both boys just stopped and stared at the EE. I could literally hear them in my head saying, "You idiot." Ultimately, the EE lost the fight, walking off in shame as the other two boys stared after him before going back to eating, drinking and just being chickens. I still don't know which one won the affections of the fully feather Naked Neck they were fighting over.

Chewey - the EE cockerel who wants love, not war.

Honestly, Desert Chick, you should pen a children's book featuring your crew! You have such an ability to transmit their unique personalities via words!!!!!!
