That is wonderful!!! Hope the rest hatch out ok
Thanks, the hatch is basically done. 1 boy hatched himself out with some of his yolk sack out side of his body and 1 girl suffocated mid zip while my hubby and I were trying to help yolkie face. So mad at myself for that... 2 girls were pipped but shrink wrapped so they have a remoistened membrane and are finishing up absorbing their blood vessels. The currently breathing chicks are 4 boys and 13 girls.

Congrats on a great hatch

I completed the first candling tonight and am a bit disappointed with my Biel girls. Only one of them had fertile eggs. Granted, she's my favorite one...and the boys' favorite one too...but I expected fertility in at least one of the other girls' eggs. Now for the real surprise...finding out who the daddy is. It's not likely to be one of my Biel boys, but could be. I guess I'll find out in about 2 weeks.

I'm down to 19 in the 'bator. I had also included some eggs from one of my EE that was being constantly mated (raped) by my EE cockerel..suspecting that there might be issues with the offspring because of the genetic issues I've seen in especially the cockerel. Her eggs did in fact fizzle, confirming for me that they should NOT be bred. I wasn't at all sad about losing her eggs since having them fizzle while incubating and far more preferable to me than having to cull deformed chicks.

yep, dud eggs is better to deal with now, than issues later. is this genetic issue you are seeing, just to the EE or can it happen to any breed? might there be a thread already on this?

idle minds while waiting for hatching

The genetic issues came with this batch of frizzled and smooth EE eggs I had purchased for hatch. Roughly half of the birds showed severely crooked inner toes, which I've also found reports linking back to fertility issues in the case of dominant vs recessive tendencies. The cause....most likely inbreeding. I decided to include a few eggs in this hatch to check dominant vs recessive. Dominant it is! I have a beautiful and extremely healthy red Ameraucana rooster that came from a blue egg that I'll breed to my EE girls to help clean up their genetics, and I'll probably have to cull my little Chewy, whether by placing him elsewhere, homing him alone, or butchering (which I'm not sure I can bring myself to do).
