A Bielefelder Thread !

(think Gatorade, or with a bird, perhaps Apple Cider Vinegar diluted).
I brought the two most listless hens up to the house. One of them just sprawled on her side in the crate with her head down. She hasn't eaten in almost 2 days no matter what I have offered her. I decided to try the Gatorade after rummaging through cabinets looking for a bottle. So I dribbled it into her mouth mainly by dripping it onto her beak, but she swallowed a bit at a time. I had her wrapped in a towel on my lap and she looked like she wasn't going to make it, but I kept dripping it in. Then I finally put her in with her buddy hen. I just picked up the towel over the crate, and she was standing up! Asleep, but on her feet. I dripped some more of the Gatorade mixed 50% with the Duramycin and she stayed asleep but swallowed.

Clearly the Gatorade has made a difference. Thanks for reminding me about it.

I am a lot more hopeful now.

wow, what is going on ?
I hope your birds are ok !

I have been off this thread a while & must have missed something....

I am back to share the news update on the 2 "silver" beilefelder chicks I hatched a few weeks ago, 2 silver pullets and a very light male, these would be F-2s, and the pullets are very silver !

I have to get photos of them today, but would describe their color as:

Take a black & white photo of a Bielefelder, that is what these little girls look like...very pretty.
So I'll get back on here as soon as I can get pics...they run so fast !

And Happy Mother's day to all!

Oh, I am so glad it seems to be working! I forgot to add that when I raised Lady Gouldian finches, I would use Pedialyte in their water for a few days after they joined the flock as they are such a fragile species. I should think Pedialyte would work just as well, if not better, than Gatorade.

Interesting about the Gatorade. I just always did things the hard way myself...mixing raw honey with water, electrolytes and probiotics. It's what I usually give to chicks in their water the first day after hatching, and also fed to chicks I bought from Cackle Hatchery to rejuvenate them. I've also used a combination of raw honey and apple cider vinegar in the water. I guess it's the same principle.

OK Biel fans....F-2s pictures...and be advised, these little guys are hard to pin down to take photos !
The male is off somewhere...I threw bread to this bunch & snapped as fast as my digital camera would go, which is so slow the birds are 15 feet away by the time the shutter clicks...

Didgital cameras leave alot to be desired !

These 2 pullets have always reminded me of owls....the one on the right was running & had her neck stretched out....

I love the neck cape pattern they are developing..see .top & lower right ,..below:

And the cutest little face below:

Trying to find one pic with a "normal" colored (Gold Crele Biel) for comparison....ok this one is horrible...but in the top right you see a normal Biel pullet, and in the lower left you see the "silver" biel pullet's back...BIG difference in color...pretty cool though ! So we waite while they grow out, and then I get to breed them back again, probably to the Biel, to establish better yellow skin.

Cool, huh ?
It sure is fun 'messing' with color.
In the event we decide to name our coloration something else besides "Silver" (and they are half Silver Cuckoo Marans so they ARE silver) then what shall we name them ?
Should we have a name contest ?
Be kinda fun!
Probably wait til they are fully fledged to get a btter idea of their exact coloration and then do a naming contest ?

They are beautiful!

Ok, here is a photo of one of Bev Davis' SILVER CRELE MARANS to illustrate what the silver crele pattern should look like:

photosilverCrele1.jpg

So note my babies' silver penciling on their necks...I am hopeful that I am getting (stumbling) closer to getting this beautiful coloration.

Incidently, the silver crele pattern does not look like the canadian birds do....the canadians are much lighter, as far as I can see, not much silver but alot of white .........................................you

can see them here: http://www.gradeehfarms.ca/bielefelder-kennhuumlhner-silber-kennsperber-silver-bielefelder.html
