A Bielefelder Thread !

I finally got some bielefelders. Not what I originally paid for, but with time a better deal. 5 female and 4 male chicks.

Congrats! My little ones are a couple of weeks ahead of yours. Don't try and buy feed by the pound. Go ahead and get the 50lb bag. You are gonna need it and then some. Mine go through 3-4 cups of feed per day. I have a batch if isbars that do not eat half as much as these guys do.

If you would like to keep up what yours will be like in a couple of weeks you can see our chicks live cam anytime.

Like you I did not plan on having day old chicks but it worked out that way. While it is a better deal in the long run, its a much longer wait to get to the point of raising your own chicks. A set of 12 just went for over $1200. I actually have more chicks than I was planning on keeping and may sell off a couple of pair in a month or so. Once they hit GFF's juvenile status.

I also saw someone preselling eggs due to be laid in September. I was like wow talk about taking "counting your chicks before they hatch" to a whole new level of "counting your eggs before they are even laid". That's over six months down the road. I'm not sure who would be buyers like that but if there are I have some ocean front property in Arizona for sale. :)

Anyway good luck with your chicks.

Are Bielefelders recognized by the APA?? Just wondering.

I had not the foggiest idea 1 way or the other. So I googled it. According to my pet chicken it isn't. A list of all breeds recognized by the APA. Maybe in a couple years once they are more widely established in the US, they will recognize them. Not that I care 1 way or the other. I think they are beautiful birds. I wished they didn't cost so much.

Nice web cam Omegahillsfarm! They look a lot my 3 week old rhodebars. I guess the differences will become more evident as they mature. Same deal on rhodebars, instead of older juvenile pair I got chicks. I agreed to take chicks when they called about them in both cases.

Really, ALL the APA breeds? Where is the Buckeye? It is an American Class breed & was recognized (i.e. admitted to the Standard of Perfection) by the APA in 1904!
