A Bielefelder Thread !

Color question:

Are bieles supposed to have more gray in the barring like this:

or have more brown in their body like this?

I had both when I hatched them. I also had some hens who had more of a "blonde" or cream look while their hatchmates had golden heads.

Good question! Most of mine are like the top photo but I have a 5 month old that is coloring out more like the bottom photo. And their fathers are farther and son - different lines on the hens.

And my girls don't have as large wattles. I'll try to get some photos tomorrow to share!

Faraday40,

The experts will have to answer the color questions. I know mine are 3rd generation from Greenfire farms who supposedly have original German stock.

Anyway - nice looking birds.

The person I got my orig hatching eggs from had many birds from the GFF 2011 import. Then he added some from the 2013 import. He said his orig birds were larger & slower to mature and the second import was slightly smaller but laid more eggs. He had them together in one flock, so my Bieles are the result of both,,,, but I got them through a 2nd breeder - not directly from GFF.

I like the more colorful barring with more brown (2nd pic), buts it's just my personal preference. Our DD likes the feather coloration of top pic because of the darker head. Our current Biele started laying at 5.5 months.

Great question! More like the top. Too much red / blonde in the body starts to deviate from SOP. A little is ok, more like a rust color, but too much isn't.
