A Bielefelder Thread !

I had heard that Bielefelders were great winter layers but I am only getting 1 egg a day from my four Bielefelder hens. Is that typical? I guess I was expecting a bit better for the reputation I thought they had!

Mine have layed all winter..................and I might add BIG EGGS as in BIG to the point I worry about prolapse...................but I have a huge mass in the bator >>>

Ours eat a lot when young but they tapered off as they matured and now they eat no more than Orpingtons.

you oughta try Jersey Giants, they'll eat ya outa house & home for MONTHS, so will Buckeyes, for that matter

My new cockerel came in the mail the other day. Found him running around the shop today LOL Can't wait to start hatching! I hate 2 eggs a day going to waste, but they are good eating eggs.

It might be because of how I feed them. I use higher protein feed of 20% - 24% protein supplemented with crushed hard boiled egg and meal worms, plus fresh greens (and chick grit) right from the start. I've found that all of my birds feather out more quickly and grow better when I up their protein for the first 6-10 weeks, depending on the breed. I feed them dry food for the first week and have now switched to fermented feed. It's just what works for me.
