It's really nice that you are researching this. All of our losses of chickens came from other people's dogs! Our first two were from neighbors dogs, but the third most devastating loss of three pullets and a severely mauled rooster came from a dog that appeared to be a stray. I sobbed when I saw it happening because I was inside the house the first two times (we don't have fenced property) to hear the commotion. The dogs were really playing, not killing to eat the birds. Chickens are fun for them to chaseI just got off the phone with a sherif's deputy and was told they don't do reports for that kind of thing?!? She told me I needed to file with small claims court. She did say that I am in my rights to "defend my property" I said "so I can shoot it?" And she just repeated "you can defend your property" lol I know the law here as of last night. I stayed up till after midnight ranting and raving reading laws so I feel pretty well versed on my rights lol She HAS to pay and if I have to take her to court, she has to pay any court costs as well. AND if she chooses to keep the dog and it kills again, she has to pay double their valueI

The third dog actually ate one entire pullet and killed two others. Our neighbor across the street saw it happening (we were are work) where he witnessed our rooster fighting the dog and getting it to come after him instead. He was badly mauled but survived (he only has use of one leg). Chicken hero he is. However, we estimated the value of a few years of future production in egg sales along with the current market value of the birds for those owners we knew that owned the dogs. They were very sorry about the problem.
Bielefelders are a special expensive breed. I am sure your neighbor could care less. It hurts me when people who don't know chickens say "they are ONLY chickens!" well...I love my birds as much as any other animal large or small.
Good luck!
