A Bielefelder Thread !

I just got off the phone with a sherif's deputy and was told they don't do reports for that kind of thing?!? She told me I needed to file with small claims court. She did say that I am in my rights to "defend my property" I said "so I can shoot it?" And she just repeated "you can defend your property" lol I know the law here as of last night. I stayed up till after midnight ranting and raving reading laws so I feel pretty well versed on my rights lol She HAS to pay and if I have to take her to court, she has to pay any court costs as well. AND if she chooses to keep the dog and it kills again, she has to pay double their valueI
It's really nice that you are researching this. All of our losses of chickens came from other people's dogs! Our first two were from neighbors dogs, but the third most devastating loss of three pullets and a severely mauled rooster came from a dog that appeared to be a stray. I sobbed when I saw it happening because I was inside the house the first two times (we don't have fenced property) to hear the commotion. The dogs were really playing, not killing to eat the birds. Chickens are fun for them to chase :(.
The third dog actually ate one entire pullet and killed two others. Our neighbor across the street saw it happening (we were are work) where he witnessed our rooster fighting the dog and getting it to come after him instead. He was badly mauled but survived (he only has use of one leg). Chicken hero he is. However, we estimated the value of a few years of future production in egg sales along with the current market value of the birds for those owners we knew that owned the dogs. They were very sorry about the problem.
Bielefelders are a special expensive breed. I am sure your neighbor could care less. It hurts me when people who don't know chickens say "they are ONLY chickens!" well...I love my birds as much as any other animal large or small.

Good luck!

still holding out hope that my poor Titus will come back. We haven't found his body so maybe he's off in the woods re cooperating. His lady love, my big Cochin has been clucking and fussing all morning poor girl. Breaks my heart.

What about boys? At what age have yours started to, ahem, get frisky?

Oh...that friskiness starts early on my farm. The Biel cockerel I kept for breeding started showing interest in my mature pullets of other breeds around 14 weeks, but didn't really start harassing my Biel girls until a couple days before they were ready to start laying. Even now, the only girls in his flock that he shows mating interest in are the ones who are laying. I recently added some Dorking mixes to the flock and while he "courts" those girls, he hasn't tried to mate with any of them because they're too young. Quite gentlemanly.

First to LowerBamaMama, I am so sorry to hear of the death of your chickens. Even in the short time I've had my girls (5 months) I know just how quickly they become part of the family. I am truly sorry...

Second, many thanks to all that responded to my Bielefelder question re their cleanliness - I am SO HAPPY to hear that they are no dirtier than others! I can hardly wait to add a trio or quartet!

Here in PA we have a law known as dogs running at large. It is a summary fine for the 1st offense and a M-3 if it occurs again in the same year. As far as getting restitution for your loss you would need to file a civil complaint with the local district justice. Also here in PA a property owner has the right to use force when preserving the well being and or live of livestock, human and or property. I know this does not help your cause but wanted to advise of our laws here in PA for other readers.

I have a tough question to ask the forum. My fertility rate is Terrible. I have 2 males and 6 females living in a house that's 10x12 and an outside run of 12x12. They are a full year old and have fresh water and food 24-7. They lay large size eggs. Out of 6 hens they lay approx. 3 eggs per day. The fertility rate is 50% at best. Out of 7 days I let them free range after morning since that's when they lay approx. 3 times per week. They eat a 16% mash feed. One of the roosters is dominate but they do not fight each other. I can see that 3 of the hens are being mounted do to loss of rear head feathers. Why is my fertility rate so Terrible?? I have had days of high heat and believed that maybe that was the reason but even when the temps drop into the 80's nothing changes. It has been like this since they began to lay in Spring and now it's Sept. What do you think.? Thank you

Could the females have too much fluff around their vent? That might interfere with fertilization.

This is a problem in Bielefelders? I have bantam Cochins that I try not to interfere with any more than needed. I really try to preserve natural breeding methods even with them and will trim occasionally if needed, but I refuse to AI. In comparison, I didn't think Bieles would have an issue there.

@treefarmer42 - Maybe the boys just have fertility issues? I guess it could happen, but two males having fertility issues seems unlikely. Does the dominate male let the other roo breed? I have an Ameraucana roo that won't let any other roo touch his girls, that's why I ask.

On a personal note...
My somewhat good hatches turned to disaster after. I had 8 pullets hatch and about the same in cockerels. Then the girls started dying. The last two showed signs of what I thought was cocci and treated accordingly. They never showed signs of improvement and died in 2 days of their first symptoms. There was no bloody poop either, I had thought I caught them in time. Now, I think it was enteritis or something. I am not sure. I am down to three pullets and five cockerels now. I had to buy more hatching eggs from a third source and they were just set last night. I was going to sell off the Ameraucanas and replace them with the Bieles, now I don't think so. These young birds have shown just how heat intolerant they are even in 80 degree weather. My bantam Cochins fair better and show less stress than these Bieles. I won't be giving up on the breed, but I am not going to eliminate the one pen of breeders that actually makes me some money and puts eggs in my fridge.

@Chickielady
had this problem until she trimmed the vents of both M/F.
