I've seen the bullseye in a few of the eggs but haven't looked at them hard enough when I crack them open to know how many are fertile. I give most of them away for consumption.you can check fertility without hatching.

Geeze, I'd love to have one like that !Oh my gosh! Not my cockerels! One of my Biel cockerels, my favorite breeder, mounts every female he gets near, even when temps are over 90. So far he's not only mounted the three Biel girls, but also my three White Rocks, four Australorps, two Barred Rocks and one Silkie...sometimes all in the same morning AND later that evening.![]()
Engineered means they have been hybridized. So your saying people have been trimming cochin fluff and artificially inseminating for tens of thousands of years and that's the only way they can reproduce? Point me to the time period as to when the cochin was originally bred. Can you supply a link?
I suspect the Cochin fluff trimming issue is due to breeding and is what got the breed where it is today. If the bird has been around as long as you say natural selection would have taken care of the excess fluff.
How is a Bielefelder anymore "engineered" as you say, than a Cochin? What does it matter that the Biele is not a heritage breed?
I've whittled my Biele flock down to 4 cockerels and 10 pullets. All the cockerels are actively trying to breed the girls and the temp has been in the 100's here.
I don't know about fertility because I haven't tried to hatch any yet.
Dang, feel for you ! It is bad enough from the outside, let alone coming from your own kin............and file every time ! If nothing else, can I be a bee in yer bonnet ? File every time & rack up income losses you are NOT getting. It's crazy that people think it's not big thing... If my dog killed her dog I'm sure she'd want some money since she just shelled out a ton having it heartworm treated... But "it's just a chicken"![]()
The laws here (as I learned afterward from a fellow Alabamaian on this site) require that she pays for the losses caused by her dog, she's supposed to have the dog put down, and if she chooses to keep the dog and it does it again, she'd have to pay double the losses. BUT after calling the local police and animal control, I have learned that the laws are pretty much non-enforceable since they consider the financial loss caused by the dog a civil matter. The police did NOTHING and animal control told me they could only come out and check the rabies vaccinations and give her a scolding (which they never showed up to do)
So I have to pay $72 in filing fees, $13 to have her served (and that's if I do it myself through the mail. It's $24 if they sherif's deputies have to do it) to get my $85 for my two birds... $85 spent, and $85 back... (I did learn that since she's at fault, I can request she have to pay the court fees but it's a gamble because if SOMEHOW I don't win the case I'd be out $85 for fees and whatnot AND have to compensation for my chickens and have nothing but a headache to show for it)
AND HERE IS AN INTERESTING SIDENOTE... If I don't file against her for the first instance and her dog does it again, I don't get the double compensation because I didn't file the first incident. So I'm risking losing more birds with only minimal comp by NOT pursuing it
ETA: Did I mention I'm flat broke and my husband and all my family that I asked to borrow the $85 told me "They're just chickens. Let it go." ? I'm surrounded by idiots. I swanny
No problems, just look, they were not here 2 years ago, and go back a few before, they were there either, they are a brand new "Engineered" breed.............."A hybrid, and I liked the breeds induced....but not so much now.I've read just about everything I could on Bieles that was available online before I acquired the breed and never realized they were hybrids. I know they were created from a few different breeds and now I know that is considered a hybrid. Thank you for explaining this.
My apologies to you Chickielady if my post came off as sarcastic. I actually thought you were being sarcastic in your reply to my post about fluff. So I'm very sorry. Don't worry about the Cochin link and my condolences to you for your health.

Wish I could help !I've pretty much come to a dead end as far as getting any compensation for my dead chickens. It comes down to saving money for a fence for my chickens or filing the court fees.
