A Bielefelder Thread !

I was hoping to breed & hatch Bielefelders next spring, but my wonderful male died at only 6 mo old. He was the perfect roo & I'm still very sad about it. Fine at 9pm & found stiff in the corner of the run the next morning. It's been 3 weeks & all the rest are perfectly healthy. The Biele pullets are laying, but w/o my male, I should sell them to reduce my numbers for winter.

Is anyone here from N Illinois & interested in 6mo pullets? (I also want to know so I may buy fertile eggs to try again in spring.) We're not too far from Chicago.

RIP My beautiful Biele Boy.
These pics were taken less than 12 hr before he died.

Here are his females.
This one is darker & has more gray in the body.

This one has more brown coloration in the body.

This one has the same coloration as above but is from a different line. Slightly smaller.

Nice pullets sorry to hear about your loss.

Me too. He was a beautiful roo.

That is so sad! I'd probably cry for a week if one of my Biel cockerels died.

Thank you everyone.
Yes, I'm pretty sad about it. I still have 2 nice English Orpington boys, but the Biele was the one I had planned on keeping. There was just something special about him.

My 2 jumbo Biele hens are about the same size as my orp roos, but the Biele roo stood about 60cm tall. He was always on the lookout & 1st to spot hawks. The 3 roos hatched together & always worked as a great team.

I'm going to keep one biele hen, but without the roo, there's not much point to keeping all 3.

Well.... there are always eggs and always next year. You know instead of giving away the hens maybe you can find someone giving away a rooster. I know it won't be the same but it won't set you back a year.

I am so sorry to hear about that. Have you considered just getting a new roo? With how long it takes to get the hens to laying age it seems like such a waste to get rid of your girls. We have two bielefelder roos at the moment that are about 5 months and need to get rid of one as we already have two older roos (only need to keep one and can't part with our old fellas lol) We have never shipped a bird that age but have had a lot of success shipping our chicks using the horizon boxes. I could send you photos and if you were interested I would ship you ours. I'm not sure what shipping would cost as I haven't weighed him obviously but it's always an option! Would hate to see you lose out on breeding your girls!

My girl is still laying. I've gotten 11 eggs from the 10th-27th. I hope she keeps it up, getting like 4 eggs a week. The others still don't look they are going to lay yet, i guess this one is going to be like the boss hen. She seems to have more of an attitude towards the others now, she will walk up to them and give them a small peck and then walk off casually. The rooster likes her more to, because she is the only one who squats for him.
