A Bielefelder Thread !

The pullets are about five weeks, the little boy 4.  I didn't have an exact DOB.  How old are yours?

Mine are almost three weeks. Yours are so big, it seems like such a huge difference!! My little boy is three to four times larger than my littlest girl though, I can see him getting there! And he eats non-stop. He even sleeps on the feeder lol.

My little cockerel does the same thing. He is an eating machine. If he is awake he is eating. He is probably 1 1/2 weeks younger than those pullets. Those two pullets are sisters. That one is huge. Did you see them in the pic when he was a couple of days old. That is why he is so much smaller. He is catching up now. My new girls are about the same age as the boy. I really like B-la-felders! I just saw the pics of yours..... they are so cute. I missed them somehow.

Our Bieles & Orps were hatched as part of my daughter's 4H project. Here is the volunteer broody hen. She got a little confused when chicks started looking her in the eye. Because they were so big, the broody hen left them at only 4 weeks old.

here are some pics of them growing up.

Notice hoe the Biele roo is the biggest. Also, the Biele pullets are about the same size as my orp roos.

25 weeks (Stood almost 65 cm tall)

This boy was a giant & very gentle. He had no need to fight because all the predators stayed away because of his SIZE. He was my fav. Sadly, I lost my Biele roo a few hours after these pics were taken. I doubt I will ever figure out why. (He was fine roosting at night & found dead in the corner the next morning. Comb was white. No blood or injuries.) I still miss him & hope to try to hatch another male biele in the spring. * I have strange luck & hatch more females. I got 6 females & only 1 male biele.

The females are now 7 months & laying beautiful eggs.

Your babies are beautiful! So sorry to hear of your loss!! I'm afraid when the time comes to put mine out because I'll be devastated if something happens, but looking forward to eggs and trying my hand at hatching some! Best of luck to you!!

Thanks Cody A, DesertChic, and Stryker for helping me with my question. I've decided to make them all the same height, and just space them at 16". I wouldn't want them to fighter over the top roost.
I have another question, how much do your biele girls weigh at which ages? Mine are almost 7 months old and they look skinny to me, i haven't weighed them recently, going to tomorrow. They were de-wormed at 4 months old even though they were acting fine, i just thought they were a bit skinny, so just in case. They weighed about 3 1/2 lbs at 4 months.
From Nov 1st to Nov 20th I've gotten 52 eggs, and i have 5 pullets. Could they be laying to many eggs and its making make them skinny? They have food 24/7. My aunt thinks they are big, but they look skinny and they feel light when i pick them up.

Hi all,

I am hoping that a pair of these beautiful birds survive a disastrous shipping this week. I won an auction from a reputable breeder for a fantastic assortment of chicks. Unfortunately the USPS failed me for the second time this year and took longer than they should have to get them to me. Only a little over half made it and some still might not. I am pretty sure I will end up with a pair of Bielefelders though. To prevent this from happening again, I am hoping to find a breeder in the western part of the country. Is there anyone out this way? I am in Idaho. Any where west of Colorado should work I think. I would hope the USPS could deliver a few states away in one or two days instead of 3 or 4!! Please let me know as I would like to get some more to grow up with these new ones.

They are all beautiful. I can't wait for mine to get big. I am sorry you lost your roo...... he sounds like he was a wonderful boy. A real Uber Chicken!

I don't know the weights of the 10 pullets I have but they do vary in both size in weight a lot. Some feel like they have lead in their pants while others are on the lighter side.
I feed high quality "Scratch n Peck" layer and they free range daily. Yours are still growing and should fill out as they mature. Genetics plays a roll in sizes and weights.

Thanks for the reply. I weighed them and they weigh 5lbs, some a little more than 5 lbs. I think they're fine, I'm probably worried over nothing.

At 22 weeks my three girls weighed between 4.5 and 5.5 lbs, so I think yours are doing just fine. I am insanely jealous of all the eggs you're getting from your girls though. Mine are nine months old now and simply don't lay. One girl had started laying at 24 weeks and was giving me 6 eggs per week and then just stopped. I think another of my girls might be giving me an occasional egg, but we're talking maybe one per week. I've seriously started considering butchering these girls for meat instead.
