A Bielefelder Thread !

I took some pics of the little ones yesterday! They are very cute. These chicks are not fancy or exotic. They seem very hardy, stout and practical in their camouflage feathers. Pepper (cat) loves to get in the nesting box and survey the realm. There were no chickens here when I rescued her from the dump. She does a very good job of differentiating between wild rats, birds, mice and the chickens. She kills something almost every day but as tempted as she is..... she does nothing more than stalk and scare the chickens a little. Sometimes she surrounded by chickens. Think how hard that must be for a hunter!
It's crazy that I feel like I'm looking at my babies. Obviously they are all siblings but they look exacally alike. I have a hard time telling my 8 week olds from my 6 week olds now. My roo is smaller I think though. Just love them!!!

I know what you mean. At a quick glance the young ones look alike. Most people couldn't tell mine apart, but as mine got older they looked different. One was darker /very little brown in body (She always looked different.) One had more of a lighter head (my "blonde") & two had more auburn heads. Of the auburns, one had longer legs & stood taller, while her sis looked shorter.

We have hen saddles, so of course that made it easy for others to tell who's who.

I watched a Youtube video of some older roosters and hens because all I have ever seen are these babies. They were such a pretty color. I like the orange hens.

Ours should look exactly alike! Some are from the same hatch. That pullet that was so much bigger than the rest is almost as big as my 6 month old Ameraucanas. She is very pretty in a very practical way. I say that because they certainly aren't exotic. They are substantial and practical looking...... My cockerel is still smaller than the older pullets but he is the leader of that little pack. They stay together everywhere they go. I let them sleep in a dog crate on the porch. It was so cute to see them come hopping up the steps to get in the dog crate every night at dark thirty..... but now it is time to stop and they don't want to. I keep trying to get them to go in the big coop..... now I am hand carrying them one at a time.

You'll need to "teach" them that the coop is their new home by locking them in there for 2-3 days and nights. Don't let them out during that period. Give them all of their food and water in there. You may also have to close of their access to the dog crate, or remove it entirely. It takes a few days for the new location to imprint on chickens as their new "safe home". Once they've been in there a few days, you may still have to coax them into the coop at night, but after a few days it will be their home in their minds and they'll go there willing of their own accord.

Just in time for the holiday season, we would like to share this video in celebration of life! It's called..."Bielefelder Chicks Hatching." Enjoy! Like! Subscribe!
