A Bielefelder Thread !

I am so glad to hear that other people have Biel girls that talk! My favorite Biel, Gretel, sounds like she's holding actual conversations with me sometimes. My son overheard one of our "chats" when I would hold Gretel and ask her questions and she would make sounds in response and he swears it sounded like she was actually trying to form word responses.

She makes these funny little honking intonations that sometimes even sound like questions. And she grumbles about some of the more amorous cockerels in my yard on a regular basis, as if she's scolding them and talking smack. Seriously...I can translate her grunts into, "Giiiirlll...that boy is just no good and needs to learn to keep outta my business...Like I would even choose him when I've got these find roosters over here..."

Too Funny! Yes, you've got the Biele talk down!

My Sussex mix is another chatty one. Her conversations are a lot more whiney and very straight forward, though. As soon as she sees me, she starts with her long "Baaaaaawk"s. In my mind I hear, "Treeats? Treeeeeeaaaats? TREEEEEEAAAATS! etc." She is very persistent and can get rather loud if I try to ignore her. DH thinks it sounds like she's moaning from starvation. She taught one of my orps how to beg, so some days I get a duet.

My group has been laying sporatically and I set up my pens according to who came from whom. I confirmed fertility from the pair but am going on faith with the quad. I had to treat everyone for lice. Seeing as they are indoor birds, not sure now they got it. Maybe my last load of shavings? Anyways, when I treat, I incubate the eggs since we can't eat them. I was not ready to start hatching, but okay - I need more Bieles in my life. And more of my bantam Cochins...

Odd warm day for feb so let my group out, ignore the Maline and Maline x lol

Still cannot say enough good things about my roo, so gentle so kind with the hens...

Very pretty, nice they got a day out! Which brings me to my question - I have three 2 month old chicks who are just about feathered out. I live in NC where we are getting quite cold at night (nothing like Canada, but cold all the same). I think I might be making a problem for myself as I've been bringing the chicks in at night and they stay in my bedroom in a 200 Vari Kennel dog crate (the size you would use for a Beagle). I put them out on a covered porch during the day with a heat mat at their disposal in a covered run as well as their kennel. Am I hurting them by not letting them experience the deep cold (like down to 10 degrees) at night? Should I just leave them out there with their crate and heat mat and cover them with a comforter? Help - I don't know what to do!!!!!!!!
