A Bielefelder Thread !

That's how I see it. It's only a "mutt" until it's officially recognized.

Okay, here's my husband's take on the old conundrum "which came first the chicken or the egg" (like I've said before, he's really getting into chickens!). I must say, it makes sense to me!

Since it is widely accepted that all birds are descended from the flying dinosaurs, it stands to reason that somewhere along the line, an egg or eggs mutated into something different that finally resulted in the chicken as we know it today. Therefore, the egg had to come first (while it was not yet a chicken egg, it was indeed an egg)!

Just thought that was an interesting thought!

Really??? I thought that Ameraucanas, Americanas, and EEs are all mutts, while Araucanas are a actual breed!?!

I can't go into the lengthy history of how Ameraucanas, Araucanas, or Easter Eggers came about. There is a BYC thread that covers the subject quite extensively. The Ameraucana breed club pages cover the history too if you wish to research. You see, USA ARAUCANAs are tufted and tail-less birds. Our USA A-MER-aucanas are muffed/bearded/with tails APA birds in only 8 accepted colors thus far. The United Kingdom calls their version of USA Ameraucanas as "Araucanas" and their Araucanas have tails, crests, muffs/beards while what the USA calls "Araucanas" are a tufted tail-less breed. I researched for a few months before I got a true-breed A-MER-aucana from a private breeder so I wouldn't be misled with an Easter Egger, Amer-I-cana, or Araucana.

At least two!!!!  We just put our fifth coop together this morning!!!!  My husband is SO PATIENT with me!!!!

I too have a patient husband. I started with an 8X8 coop. I quickly outgrew that when he said "go for it" on the first of a few rare breed auctions last November so the scramble was on to build the 12X16 coop before the snow fell. Then he bought me a GQF Sportsman for Christmas. Now we just completed the first 4 of 4x4 breeding pens. There will be more in the future as well as another 12X16 layer coop. He is such an enabler!!

I'm a lucky one too. Not only has my husband bought me two self-contained coops, one 10'x10'x6' cage, and one condo with a powder-coated steel run, but he also bought me an entire cabin to devote to my chicken habits, plus most the power tools and wood I've used to create pens, runs, roosts and nesting boxes.

The chicken cabin, and part of the steel run attached to the chicken "condo".
