A Bielefelder Thread !

Sadly, I also learned last night that three men visiting the area from Germany set out on a 5-mile hike very early in the morning this past weekend with very little water and no understanding of our harsh climate. As I understand it, one turned around early on and got lost, and is yet to be found. A second turned about shortly after the first and made his way back to safety. The third was found dead on one of the trails. A very sad tragedy. I confess that if a local had done the same I would be far more judgmental, but these three really had no idea what they were getting themselves into.

I will continue being "judgmental" since it makes no sense not researching the terrain or area you're visiting. It is still sad but I can't help thinking a bit of common-sense research of a foreign country visitation should've been done first.

My poor Bielefelder pullet! She is not liking this heat. I have even sprayed them..all of the girls, with a hose. It got up to 103 yesterday. It never gets that hot here. Well, very rarely! Now today, close to 100 again. That poor girl is panting. I don't know what she will do when she is full grown. Like I was saying in a past post, she is already about as big as my LF laying hens. Big girl!
Trying to keep things damp for them to lay in..in their dust bath areas. I have been freezing water in small bowls, and putting those big ice cubes in their water.

Aww, I have a little black pullet out there that will look like this girl. A bantam cochin right? Her name is Fanny. :) Sweetest little faces, and mine is a sweet girl too. I love the bantam cochin.

Close, mine is a bantam Orpington. I think they look pretty similar to the cochins but without the feathered feet. Mine is called Paloma; she is sweet too. I'm glad she got the chance to be a mom.

Invest in a stand alone portable mister like Orbit or Arctic Cool at Home Depot or Lowe's - around $15 and hook up to a hose and run the mist all day in a shady area - the hens will be under it most of the day. I like the stand-alone misters that usually have a couple mist nozzles on the end - it's more than enough to keep the hens comfortable - well, as comfortable as one can be in the 100's.

I'm starting to think I'm the only person on the planet who owns chickens that really don't appreciate misters. My birds avoid that mist like their life depends on it.
