A Bielefelder Thread !

Very pretty! I've a BielsxPBR cross that looks much the same. She pretty much was autosexing at birth, but according to Barred Rocks, not Biels standards. Go figure!

Quick question to the group - I am big into homemade bread and my chickens certainly enjoy the leftovers (sourdough and banana being their favorites!). Yesterday I made a really good loaf of rye that included a can of flat beer in the recipe. Would the beer hurt the chickens when it is time for the bread to go stale?

Thanks, BYC!!!!!!

There shouldn't be a problem. All of the alcohol will have baked off. I'm curious to hear how they like the bread though.

As someone who's yet to venture into baking bread from scratch (other than banana bread and zucchini bread) I applaud you. I'm gearing up to make Challah and Brioche this coming weekend...if I can make the time, that is.

I bake bread all the time. (I cheat & use a bread maker for the dough. Just dump in the ingredients, push a button, & return in 90 min to shape, rise, & bake. I got mine at a thrift store for $5. I never wanted to try baking with it, but I do use it at least 3xs per week. My family is spoiled & doesn't like the taste of store bread. Brioche is great!

I put some brioche blobs onto a baking sheet for simple hamburger-like buns. (I like to brush with an egg wash for the pretty shine.)
The reason for the brioche is usually for DH's fav egg sandwich:
Brioche bun
Soft scrambled eggs with fresh cut chives
caramelized onions
sharp cheddar
bit of sauce (mayo with a little chipotle)
an extra sprinkle of chives
then add top of bun.

It's a little messy to eat, but a delicious work of art. Plus, all of the ingredients are probably already in your kitchen &/or backyard.

Ha something to do with all those chives taking over LOL

Wow, that recipe sound delicious! I'm going to copy it to my recipe file so that when my spring crop of chives comes in (they simply will not grown in my Aerogardens) I'll know where to find it! Thanks for sharing!

Yes, herbs are basically weeds, so pretty easy to grow. Years ago I planted some herbs in a flower bed. Except for the rosemary, which dies every winter, I never had to replant. The next year I planted some raspberries, next year strawberries, then a garden, then a bigger garden, then my neighbor's garden, then a fruit tree, then more trees, then chickens, & more chickens, & more bushes, etc. I've been blessed with the ability to keep expanding & trying new things each year. DD hatched quail for her sci fair experiment. Guess what's being added this year?

Just got our 1st quail egg on Monday. (DD hatched them over Thanksgiving break)

The fancy egg sandwich is an easy, quick meal during the spring egg boom.

Another good, filling egg recipe:
Put an egg (over-easy or poached) on top of leftover mashed potatoes - then add cheddar, chives, & bacon bits on top
or
Make extra thick Potato Leek soup + that runny golden-yolked over easy egg + cheddar & chives

Now I'm hungry.....

Yum! Homemade bread! Love your big birds! Chickens love bread and the more multi-grained the better they like it. However, I limit yeast breads to occasional treats only because I read the yeast from the breads in their crop is not good. Banana bread or muffins uses baking powder rather than yeast and is probably better for them if it is a regular treat -- I would add rolled oats, quinoa, flax, chia, raisins, or etc, to the banana bread for extra nutrition. I add extra grains to our waffles so we're not eating plain white enriched flour only in the recipe. I never read anything about beer for chickens but yeast is used to brew it so I probably wouldn't use it for my hens. Maybe someone else has had experience and will chime in.

Cooking kills the yeast in bread.. in fact too hot of water kills the yeast when you try to make it.
I feed fermented feed, which has yeast (and other probiotics) in it... https://tikktok.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/fermented-feed-faq/
Lots of people feed spent brewers grains
I would be more concerned about the lack of nutrition in bread, but as an occasional treat it should be fine.

Thanks to all for their input re yeast! The thing I like most about bread is that it is a good source of carbs which can help my crew stay warm in the winter. I feed a bit (not loaves, just a third to a half of a loaf for 16 chickens/roosters) in the morning and before I tuck them in for the night, I give them some cracked corn. So far, so good and it seems they start to lay earlier after their molt.

Well, now we have the opposite:

 Next to "normal" chicken eggs
Quail eggs!

These were DD's sci fair project. The birds were hatched on Thanksgiving & we decided to keep 6 of them. Got one egg on Monday & 2 eggs today. They're so cute! Hoping to save a bunch up for a sandwich or something.

Save up a couple dz and try a pickling recipe. There are lots of different flavors and ingredients to use. Don't think "pickles" goes way beyond that. Yummy!
