Today I've taken the first steps in obtaining backyard chickens in Stone Mountain Georgia. I called the compliance office today and was inform to wait until after January 28th when a SUPPOSEDLY new ordinance will be in place lifting a lot of the restrictions for a person to own chickens in Dekalb County Georgia. Could it be Dekalb County is becoming chicken friendly. If you own min of 10,000 sq You can own chickens. Min space from neighbors property line will be 50 feet. The amount of fenced in chickens one can have is calculated by 25 square feet per bird. Just a few changes I hope I heard right. I can't wait I hope this new ordinance becomes a reality I am starting with 10 - 15 hens. Lucky chickens, we are vegetarians but I can taste them fresh eggs now! Oh our coop's name is "Eggtropolis".

DeKalb County Georgia is proposing a set of new codes which would be a huge step gorward for urban farmers.
The vote is slated to happen on 1/28/15, but it isn't a certainty! It could be deferred or overturned.
Please plan to attend the board meeting and make sure they vote, and vote right!
9am, 1/28/15 at Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Dr. Decatur, GA.
Help us bring DeKalb county into the new millennium!!!

We are working on same in Paulding Co. Our hearing is Jan 27 to allow Pet Chickens in Paulding. I work at CHOA in Decatur and see backyard chickens all the time in the Clifton Rd beautiful homes area. Check our our facebook page and send a "like" our way. We are trying to get the word out to other local chicken advocates.

Hey Feral Farrells and our meeting is the next day hmmm makes you wonder if GA it self will be Chicken friendly LOL Riiiiiiiiight that will be the day. You funny you mentioned the chickens in that area. I was a letter carrier in that area and i used to see a few. Here where I live a few blocks from me there is a home with at lease 20 - 30 hens. I pass them everyday 5 times a week and i have been doing the same thing for the past 3 years when my 16 year old daughter and I pass them after school and that is slow down so much that i am almost at a crawl just to see the chickens lol crazy huh lol?

Ok today is suppose to be the day I'm here at the meeting for new zoning laws when it comes to having backyard chickens. Fingers are crossed and know in my heart that these commissioners will do the right thing..

I am so done with Dekalb County can't get anything right except everything wrong. How about now they are deferring the vote till March (really) and had the nerve to chuckle about it. Oh well I be dressing my chickens in dog outfits trying to avoid the code enforcer. Literally I am so done this was suppose to be our big moment in time.

Jacksonville, Fl went through the same crap as you're going through. Proposals would go back and forth in committee after committee, board after board, before an ordinance went before the city council...then they sent it back again to go through the process all over again at least a couple of more times over stupid stuff. It took over a year and a half, maybe longer before it finally came to a vote. Ongoing lobbying with each zoning board member, animal control board, and each city councilmen/women during this time frame helped. It was a close vote in favor of the chicken ordinance and the mayor signed off on it. There was a lot of frustration and it took dedication, patience, perseverance on the part of wannabe chicken owners. I was there at the final zoning board vote and final city council vote and spoke up as did many others in the alotted times given.
Hang in there and organize, show up in force. Get your local newspaper involved for interviews with prospective chicken owners and/or write a letter to the editor. Good luck.

Flock Master because of redistricting or rezoning problems it was mentioned "till we fix this problem we can't get to the chickens, people want chickens" "chuckle chuckle". WTH!! I am going to take a chance start with 4 to 6 hens, hate it, 1 acre cul du sac, no neighbor in the rear, neighbors on the right are cool as hell, vacant house on the right. No neighbors can see in my back yard partial nude all summer lol I know I know TMI, LOL. I am taking the risk yup starting my coop this week at lease breaking ground.. Yup!

At the risk of jail time..... I just wanted to also add.... I'm in Gwinnett Co GA.... hiding. I have a pretty large lot and very cool neighbors also, but still scared to death I might one day lose my small flock. SO ridiculous that all the dogs around my neighborhood bark LOUD and OFTEN, yet my little clucks might send me to the big house! Ok.... I'm exaggerating but I hate having to keep quiet about my new found passion for CHICKENS! LOL (but not really funny, in reality) These are the best pets (along with my quiet well-mannered dog, of course). Hoping for the DeKalb Co ordinance to be changed--and eventually for all responsible chicken people to be able to keep a backyard flock.
