a black bear got 2 of my 9 wk olds yesterday!

Blame PETA and other animal rights groups for NJ's bear problems. Now in NJ the Wildlife officers shoot the bears with no revenue going to the state. Instead it costs the state money. I work everyday in NJ and in Sussex and Warren Counties there are a tremendous amount of bears and a tremendous amount of agenda oriented animal rights folks who I can't even say have thier heart in the right place. Bears aren't taken to PA and aren't taken far at all. The more roads they drive over means more roads for them to travel across getting back to thier home range. At least in PA that was the approach which many states modeled in thier bear research and management. bears are not taken far whether your told that or not. It ain't good for the bears and it ain't good for the folks driving the roads. NJ is a state of extremes and I drive 67 miles one way at the end of the day to find a little peace. Keystonepaul

If a bear has cubs you really want to stay away..black bear will attack with out anywarning when they have cubs.. if the cubs go up a tree id stay away or mama will surely come after you..
electric fencing should work, just make sure it is set high to shock them good the first time, they learne quickly from it..

Here's two pic's of bear ive taken. the one i got behind my home about a half hour walk to get to where i took her
We are about 30 mins from NJ

paul you don't have to convince me really. LOL And I'm just perplexed here because the family of bears were back at my house this am. it's been at *least 3 wks* since they were here & the last time it was just the cubs, with mama no where in sight. I'd thought maybe mama had been hit by a car or maybe a neighbor had taken care of her & then after that day there was no sign of the mama or cubs. I thought the DOWLF&G might have taken them away because they wouldn't be able to live on their own. & then suddenly here they ALL are. You seem to know the system that's being used had they just relocated them some where that they didn't have far to go?

As far as them not being located to PA it's been a long time since I'd heard that & I thought that perhaps that's what they do with the ones in our area. I think what WAS the case years ago is now just different. When a bear is suddenly seen running through a town like Paramus it's on the news on network channels but ours is town that it's relocated to. If we were on the news every time we had a bear in the GARAGE, on the deck, in the pool house, or hanging on a hammock it would be every night. I mean families in Vernon have had them break right into houses & we hardly hear about that on the news unless it includes a demonstration by the B.E.A.R. group..... All the animals that have been killed? we never hear about it. LOL When we make a complaint to authorities we're told to wash the garbage cans/use ammona. I guess the chickens, horses & other farm animals are just suppose to fend for themselves? I shouldn't talk about it this am I'm annoyed they're back & bitter toward those who are portecting them to the point I can't protect even my dogs. I'm actually as far North as you can get in Passaic County & might as well be in Sussex County if that gives you a clue to where I am. And yes where I am we are in "extreme danger" & I fear soon it's going to be a kid. Think bus stop & back packs. It's just a matter of time & in the moment for a kid to remember "don't look it in the eye & don't run" ummm 1st reaction right? And when you use logic with these people you're told to "move out of the area if you don't like it". I hardly think moving to the suburbs is the place to set up a small farm. LOL They don't want developments & yet they don't want to allow the open land either because farmers need to be able to protect their livestock.

Hi Charlie, I appreciate the advice really I do but from PA to here I think the situation can't be seen for what it really is. With *no exaggeration* my neighbors 23 yr. old son was sitting in the back yard quiet one night when a Mama bear & her 2 cubs came walking through close enough he could reach out & pet the cubs..... Another neighbor had a bear go in for his winter's sleep under the guys deck. He had been renting the house & hadn't gone in until Jan. not realizing it the *family dog* kept running in & out under the deck barking (a lil floo floo doggie with some spit & fire in him). he called animal control in town & was told (& I quote) "It'll come out & leave in spring" & he just had to *leash walk his dog* in the mean time. We live in the country on 4 acre lots & yet this guy has to leash walk his dog like he lives in the city & heaven forbid the dog get out at the wrong time. Anyway Mama bears with cubs are almost a daily experience here because there are SO MANY of them. I think we have 3 different mamas within my neighborhood &/or like 5 miles of that (how far do they travel)? The sow with cubs who ate my chickens she had FIVE cubs. People think we're like making it up because there are 5 but it's true. Another sow has 2 cubs & another sow had 4. I'd written yesterday on another thread about the 700# bear that was operated on on site in a street & then when it woke from the tranquilizers shot with rubber bullets to make it run & "recondition it to not like people" which I understand them wanting to acheive that but can you imagine the pain from surgery to reattach a limb & then shooting it with a rubber bullet to piss it off right next to the *marina's of Greenwood lake????? There are all what use to be summer housing that are now full time houses & my house is right over the mountain from this & no one had any warning even. can you imagine THAT bear encountering the next barking dog? I'll have to see if I can find the news article for you. they all thought here it was a "great thing" that this vet came out & performed surgery on location & yea it's a dedicated guy but what the hell? They might have at least WARNED the poeple who's kids might be on bikes or people out "walking"?

I routinely go out with pot lids & bang the crap out of them until all cubs are down from the trees & gone with mom. Now some times I'll do it from a more secure place like a window, but the day the cubs were in the trees as they ate parts of my chickens that were already killed I wasn't going to hang around waiting for them to come down to scare them away. Mom was on her way to sniffing out the 2 chickens left that were in hiding & there's no way I was going to watch them polish off the other 2 without trying to scare them off.

That all said, you have no idea how greatful we here in NJ are for those getting rid of a few just over the borders! Please do pass the word we'd be grateful for any help in cutting back on the numbers of them. There will be 11 more added to the problem now & heavens knows how many in sussex & surrounding areas. It's just so dangerous here now we might as well be living in the city.

Here's a picture for you all from my yard. This is just outside the fenced in part of my yard at the end of the driveway. This was because I had the garage open while unloading groceries. Hubby grabbed the camera and taped a few minutes of them sitting eating because people don't always understand what we're talking about when we say we have bears as "visitors". Normally we chase them right off so they don't think they're welcomed hered.

sorry this little video just didn't work properly I'll have to retry later.

This persons video is much better than mine. This was from last year & shows again the normal here in NJ & the "bear people" telling us to "go living in the city".

How long is it before they reproduce? I imagine these 4 are around the age of a teen now right? I think they were still reall cub like at the time though they were big & without mom at the time.

Just see my post for today..this is SO OUT OF CONTROL!! I have never had problems like this before. It isnt like we are in a drought, we have plenty of greenery, there maybe are no more wild animals out there? What will they eat then?? I want to throw up...

Deb I'm really just so sorry to read you lost so many. Did I read the other day that you had had a turkey too? Please know you're not alone & that I know just how you feel....

You should have the right to protect your family, if those bear keep coming around id level them..

My children come very first no matter what the law would say about killing any bear....

Those bear would be dead bear..

Here they either run or go down...

If the game wardens or what have you there cant protect..you must do what means nessary to do so..Its a right we have to protect are families..

Chickens are one thing, but when it comes to human life its a whole other ball game..

Guns do protect..Id also advise any local police and or game or animal warden of what is happened there. Let them know that if a bear threatens you it will be shot..

Black bear do readly travel between pa and nj, i have few hunter friends from jersey and they always tell me the stories about the bear there..When they start mulling people is when the poo will hit the fan..it will happen sooner or later. Also when people feed them makes them think us humans are a food source.(feeding bear is a bad idea) o there cute and fuzzy but the can be a holy terror..

Deb..I wanted to add, we feel for your lost feathered freinds and you guys to..

Hi Charlie, the "human killing" hasn't happened here *yet*. And we HAVE had people attacked & then it's "blamed on them" "they had food" etc. & yes you're correct people shouldn't be feeding them & here in NJ it's illegal & they had started *checking to enforce it*. With all the "bear group protestors" guess who was feeding the bears? If you really want a peek at the bear problem in nj go to youtube & just type in "black bear on hammock" people think this is cute & it is *not* they see cute little cubs that are "playing" & yes they're adorable but they ARE bears. & just like they don't know any better but to be chewing my chickens legs while sitting in the trees waiting for mom are we thinking they're not going to be wanting to chew the leg of a kid next? We're *always told* bears "are not meat eaters...." & they won't bother you.

From what I understand the bears are so large in number & of course the housing development here is in such abundance now that the bears are being pushed out & going toward upstate NY & now the Catskills are see so many more too & that's how a couple years ago they had the issue with the bear dragging off that baby girl. I imagine that PA would be the same with the over flow of the population going that way since there'd be more open space right?

Hubby has the shot gun loaded though if a person shoots a bear & it hasn't actually had it's hands ON a person there could be an arrest here. That's what happened to 1 guy on the lake because the thing was coming through the door & his wife & daughter were in the house (it was a real small starter house) & he got his gun & shot it. & because of the position of the bullet he'd been labled that he "shot it in the back". They had to move because of the B.E.A.R people driving by throwing stuff at his house. As far as the police they know & I'm actually living with a brand new to the force officer.

So they're aware of the situation here. But their hands are tied here too a bit because the bear people are truly nuts. The cops shot a pretty large bear up in Vernon that was *in someones house* & had mauled their dog & the bear people where there protesting *at the people house* the next day. I think they caged themselve & then played dead or something but it was real in your face. These poor kids hadn't been truamatized enough with their dog getting mauled..... Anyway they'll give the cops a hard time too. It's more than just one NJ person that is saying "I'm so ready to move" & the high taxes is only a portion of the reasoning why....
