so really uncomfortable then ? gonna give it a try but it is just that she is clearly extremely sad and already uncomfy but you're right , gotta get her trough this , can't have her being broody now ( 2 others are already way too often broody and now a third , that is too many and since I am not planning for a hatch and she is the best egglayer it is only for the best , hope she can understand that in some way ... the sight is soooo pethetic . Did it work on your broodies all the time ? I mean guaranteed ?? because I really hate the cage but sometimes there are no other options , she and my buff are the best layers here ( twice a day a big egg ) , going to get her angry now ;)

Question plz I have a broody hen which is great, only think is I didn't know she was and kept taking her eggs, so I got 12 eggs from a friend and put them under her she is setting them. I need to know will she stay broody long enough to hatch them???

I'd take the blanket off. Your trying not to give her a dark comfy place so she will break being broody.

We don't have a wire cage anymore so just use the small grow out pen. I put the broodies in there and close the small coop door for the day. Let them in the coop at night then pull them out in morning and close the door again. They've no place to sit and are in daylight all day. Three days of that and brood is broken.

Had a girl in there for two days and a relative heard her carrying on yesterday and let her out of pen. I thanked them kindly as now I have to put her back in for another three days after taking her off one of the layer coop nest this morning. I've broken two broodies so far this spring. This variety is partial to brood...

yup , that is a big con about them in fact . I sometimes even think to myself " hey when is your breed NOT broody constantly ??? because even in the cold of winter they have it and when they have it , they HAVE IT ! ;(

hi geina ! if she stays on it now and did before she should stay on them untill they hatch I think ! but a broody can also suddenly change her mind while she was certain at the beginning ! also depends on how long it was before you putted the eggs out , because she doesnt notice the difference and is in case of too long going to believe they won't hatch , altough if she stays on it and keeps it warm she can already hear them in short time and will talk to them so she'd probably stay and hatch ! good luck and congratz ! :)

Let me say this---I have heard of some saying it does not work for them, some say it works some time, I will say this---I probably broke 45 broodies in 2015 alone, ALL 45 broke---some would be back to laying in a week to 2 weeks. Sure maybe 3 or 4 tried to go broody again in a few weeks, but I did not give them any time---back in the broody cage. BUT Again, I follow my breaking method to a T(some don't).....at least 72 hrs MIN, and Nothing to lay on---no metal pans, no feed pans to lay in, no roost, no blocks/bricks under the bottom and the cage Has to be elevated up off the ground/floor. As stated above my broody breaker cages are hung on the wall----ready to go at a moments notice. BUT again I did set 72 broody hens in 2015 alone---I had to break some because of not having enough private pens at the time to set them all and did not have the time---at that time to build move private hatching pens(All my broody hens are moved to a private hatching pen at the beginning of their broodiness), but I have about 20 private hatching pens now.

Thanks yea she was broody for two wks or I haven't got a egg from her in two wks. I was really worried she wouldn't stay on them cause I read they only stay broody for 25 days. Praying for a big hatch will keep ya posted. Appreciate your help

Usually, if you checked her to see if she was going to stay for a few days before setting her----she probably will. If you let her set for a few weeks then stuck the eggs under her for 3 more weeks----That's a Big Question---some broodies will some want.

LOL----Throw that book in the trash---that's Not true. Once you set a hen and she hatches her chicks---she might stay another day----if you allowed other eggs to get added to her nest---once the chicks hatch----she might set there trying to hatch the others for a day or two longer---But after that """"MOST""" leave the nest to take care of them.

As I stated in the above post(#17)---if you waited 2 weeks or so before you set her----she might set there for 3 more weeks if she is a die-hard broody. Good Chance but I personally would not wait that long to set her and If I did set her that late I would Make sure she was healthy and not put expensive eggs under her.

when one of my hens is broody and I want to let her hatch I usually wait untill she is clearly willing to hatch ( I wait for a week to know for sure and only put eggs under that are from chickens here , once it is clear she is hatching and as contagious it is another goes broody I wait longer with the second one , she stays on nonfertile eggs while she is a ' standbye broody ' for 2 weeks , once two weeks have gone bye and both are still determined I get some hatching eggs on ebay from breeds I do not own yet or breeds that never like to hatch . works quite well so far ...but I do not raise the chicks , I let them

keeping fingers crossed :) . I myself am waiting untill it is really summertime and when I get more time because I also make use of broodycoops and have to finish some because some are too old . Going to create an entire new flock , having too many old hens that are not layin anymore but with the breeds I want ;) , keeping all of you posted when that is ! :))
