A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Queenie has decided that she prefers the company of the ducks instead of the turkeys. She actualy has made herself the bottom of the turkey pecking order because she refuses to stay with the actual turkeys and flies out every chance she gets. Total belly button!

Huh...whats up with those Palms? They seem to have different temperaments than the rest of the heritage birds. Well Aurora., she looks happy!!

Ralph - your turkey bed time sounds like a bit of chaos, I love hearing about their antics

Aurora - Queenie matches the ducks perfectly, she blends right in :)

Memphis - I was so looking forward to pics of Daisy and Annie in their costumes, can't believe they pooped out early on the Halloween thing :p. I'm so jealous of your warm and dry weather.

Apparently we're setting records here, it has rained heavily 28 of the last 30 days. Good grief, no wonder I feel so soggy. It isn't exactly warm either (not cold like some of you - but dang it's damp and chilly). It was nice out yesterday so I made sure to get everyone out for a few hours to run. Today I ducked out of work early because it stopped raining after lunch (so I could come home and give the birds some free range time :D)

Big Bird is starting to look a bit plump from certain angles, maybe the new feathers added a pound or two? I can't believe how dark the feathers on the back of her head are now, I could hardly notice them before she molted - now she has a racing stripe on her head! A neighbor came by yesterday and asked if we were missing a tom. He had a royal palm show up and thought it might be one of our boys. For a second I was tempted to take him....and then remembered that I have four boys and probably don't need any more lol.

I am going down one turkey hen,

I have decided to send one to Wyoming to the famous R2elk's school for wayward turkeys.

I have a greyhound ticket or her. Hopefully they will pick her up in town.

She can no longer live here without serious retraining. All day today the turkeys have hung out just outside the door to the coop. It has been a terrible yucky drizzling day. I went and got a small bucket of treats to lure them inside. Most of the turkeys started into their pen. This one, which happens to be the one my DW thinks is blind because she can never seem to find the door. Takes off running away from the coop calling the young turkeys to come to her. They started to. They would rather follow her than me. I finally got them all in, except her.

Then she came running to the door screaming at me for "locking her out"!

I cannot have this behavior, I am sure R2elk's school for wayward turkeys will change her into a good turkey and stop her from trying to corrupt the young ones.

Two things, #1, I do not use treats to get the type of behavior that I want. #2, When all else fails, removal of the offending turkey's head precedes bathing and preparation for the final meal. I am sure that even you can handle the #2 procedure on your own.

One other item that helps me get cooperation is that there is only one place that processed food is ever available. It is in the coop and it is always available.

Good luck.

I hope you like the midget white JR.

I have decided with Judy's input to try the R2Elk turkey rehabilitation program on the yearling Tom. I am sick of him. I am not taking Sidekick to the next show or any other turkey. The young one has managed to scab Sidekicks head and beat it to the point it is nearly twice its normal size. I have them in separate pens now.

Judy and I decided we do not need him, We have Sidekick and a couple younger toms coming up. The nameless Tom will enter the training program on the 20th or 21st. Depending on when we have enough time to administer retraining. We were going to have one of Bert's kids as the guest of honor, but the young tom has earned that position as of today. We warned him last week this could happen. Now it has.

I am actually relieved to have made this decision. I have been thinking about this too long. I might have to try to make a bigger killing cone between now and then.

The hen that thinks it is fun to call the young ones away from the coop at bedtime, might be joining the tom, Neither has a name so they are both good to go....
