A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Contrary to popular belief, I am still around and my turkeys haven't eaten me (yet). I just took a hiatus for a while.

It is almost 30 degrees and there are two inches of snow here. The chickens are mildly horrified, but the turkeys have taken it upon themselves to clean up the snow by eating it. Think I could rent them out as all-natural snow melts?

Good to see you Feathyr! Glad your birds haven't eaten you yet :)

We're sitting right around freezing here, had a little bit of snow yesterday but it didn't hang around. At least it finally stopped raining. I was starting to feel like I should build an ark and load everyone into it

I may have to put Coco down tonight. She was fine yesterday morning and when I got home after work I noticed that she had a prolapsed vent. She doesn't love being handled, so DH helped me hold her to clean her up, check for an egg and put things back where they should be. She freaked out when she was separated so I put her back on the roost last night. This morning she's prolapsed again, so I think she may not make it. I'll know more when I get home tonight. Dang I hate this - I wish she had stopped laying this fall :(.

Anyone have success treating a prolapsed turkey hen or suggestions, or just put her down?

It's not cold here, It's about 20 degrees, but we have your wind at about 30 mph from the NW. I have not opened the birds doors yet. They will not go outside much today with this wind. I know my wimp birds.

we're at about 34 right now with freeing rain. All my goofy birds are out in it. Figures. Normal rain they don't leave the coop lol

oh no! I'm so sorry. I really hope she can recover. I've never dealt with prolapse before but I've heard to keep them separated, in a dark area to discourage laying and to use hemorroid (sp?) cream on it. Please keep us updated!

Sorry about your hen's problems.

Here are some threads about prolapsed vents. Hopefully you can find something worthwhile in one of them.

Good luck.

Thanks for the links! I'll check again when I get home and see if the tissue still looks healthy and possibly try to treat again. I cleaned her up last night and pushed everything back in. Darn the early darkness these days - checking in the dark with a headlamp is not fun. She whacked me in the head with her wings last night and almost put me on my butt.....she definitely objects to my handling of "that end" of her.

Sorry to hear that about coco.

sending best wishes that everything works out with her

Feisty I have no idea if this will work or not..

I had a hen with a prolapse. It was sticking out and all ugly. I did nothing. I figured she would either die or not. (this was a chicken, Pocahontas). She would not let me catch her so I figured I would just find her dead in a day or two.

The prolapse either shrunk or went inside of her. She even lays eggs still. I figured I had nothing to lose by letting nature runs its course. If I out it in and she died, she would be dead. If I did not put it in and she died, she would be dead.

So I did nothing and it took care of itself. I would not put her down unless she was in pain or acting like she was miserable. It is not like you can eat the meat. At least, I would not eat the meat and run the risk of an infection being inside her.

Whatever happens good luck!

All my turkeys went in on their own today! But I had to fill the feeders in the coop. All the young turkeys were in the rafters. When I filled the feeders half had to come down and see what was going into the feeders. You know turkeys, always having to check up on things.

A couple went outside when I was filling the feeders. I took the bobcat back to it's shed and went to the pole barn and got my egg basket. I came back and half a dozen or so turkeys were outside. They made me chase them back in. One turned and made a break for it, I turned it around in time to see Sidekick chasing the young turkeys outside.

Sidekick is the problem! He does not like the young turkeys in the same roosting area he is in. Sidekick should be a little more careful about getting caught being a bellybutton around the holidays as the menu is not set in stone yet.
