A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Good morning everyone.

@R2elk Those sound like they will be nice looking poults.

Well, I just had a near disaster with Ralphie's eggs! I THINK they will be OK...

My Stealthbator (homemade mini fridge) has been holding its temps so steady, that I decided to let Ralphie's eggs stay in there, along with a couple other hatches of my own eggs. And I've just been running a batch of my own in the new Genesis 1588 as a test run of that. Well this morning the temp spiked up to 108 for maybe an hour!

The SB has an STC1000 controller on it that has been great in the past. But I noticed it has been running cool lately, albeit very steady. I had it set for 38.1 and it was holding a great 99 -100F (Per my other thermometers) This morning it was only 98, so I upped the setting about 0.2C. An hour later I checked it, and the temp was 108, and the STC said it was set in the mid 40s! I honestly thought I only bumped it up by 0.2, but maybe not? Or else there is a glitch. It is now set for 37.5C, but my thermometers are reading 109 -110! Must be an STC failure.

Anyway, I rescued all the eggs out of there and moved them to the Genesis. I candled them all, and there is a lot of movement in the ones I can see through the shells. The darker ones look fine too, I just didn't see actual movement. So the spike didn't kill them yet, although I suppose if the damage is done, it could affect them in the coming days. Fingers crossed that they will live.

Oh, and Ralphie's eggs still had one clear and one blood ring like before when I candled them at 7 days, but now one of the repaired cracks looks like it quit early, and I'm pretty positive the CL egg died long ago too.

But I will leave them in until there is no hope left at all. I still have hopes for 8 SS though, if this temp spike didn't harm them.

Edited, because after I posted it, I realized I wrote the facts incorrectly.

I hope you caught them soon enough.

Repaired eggs seldom hatch for me. I actually had one this week the crack/hole was so small I thought about repairing it.....Then I put it in a meat loaf instead.

Do not throw out the CL egg unless you are 100% sure. I can never see movement in them. If it is solid and I cannot see through the lower part of the egg it goes into the hatcher. Also know they will not hatch in 21 days. Finally after years of hatching I have decided to put the CL eggs in a day earlier than the other eggs.

R2elk. I am hoping yours hatch on Sunday. and not Monday.

The only eggs I threw out were the two SS that I could see were nothing but yolk. One of those seemed to have a blood ring, but was otherwise clear. Lockdown is Tuesday, and I will not throw any away that look like they have even a ghost of a chance of hatching.

I checked my Stealthbator again later in the morning, and it again had reset itself to 43C! (No eggs inside.) I believe the STC1000 must have crashed. That sucks, because I thought those things were supposed to be so great, and now if I want to build a better cabinet incubator, I don't know what kind of controller to trust.

I wonder if there is a fuseable link of some kind we could find that opens up, melts or whatever at 102 degrees.

If there is I would put one in all of them. I would rather have the eggs go cold than hot. That said, this weeks hatch was terrible because of the turner quitting and the electricity going out. Luckily, the people that were to get chicks this week are all local and knew about the problems we had with the tornado. They have been most forgiving.

Quote: ahhhhhh Thanks!! this one goes ALL white, blue back bright red, and so quick too! I sat for a long time just watching them, I think the younger boy has to go, the momma was on him talking to him and herding him around saying stuff to him and I think she is saying, boy its time to go find you a wife! weird got a video of them, the whole time the older male was just fluffed up and backing mother up.

I think in mine when the head goes all white they are really excited or really mad. I never trust them when the head is white.

I had one with a white head walking towards and alongside of me tonight and giving me stink eye.. I explained to him what happens to a Tom that should do something stupid this close to Easter.
I just wanted to be sure because of the kids, thought maybe something I could look out for. if they would get mean how do they do it with feet or beak?

I thought in tom head colors

Red: is showing dominence or aggitation.

White: is passive or contented.

White/blue: ready to breed.

But just what I've noticed from hunting and my turkeys.

On another note my crossbeak EE was dead when I checked them this afternoon. She lived longer than I thought as bad as the beak was.

Notice the color change as big red Tom enjoys the love from Esther. Don't worry, Esther knows never to completely trust a male during breeding season, but still, she does love cuddling him. He seems to almost enjoy it too, once he relaxed.
How adorable!!!!

ohhhh praying they are ok!! Good luck with this batch!!

Sally when they have hit me it has been feet and or whole body. I have never seen them attack with their heads other than when they have a snood pulling contest.

BTW they only get one hit on me,,,, before the next stage of their existence begins. Normally a cold existence in a heat shrunk plastic bag.

I see any actions ahead of time to show they gonna hit on you?
