A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Folks,

I have recently had a conversation with the fertrell guy supporting APPPA on feed for heritage breeds. I have to admit that my mind is still just swirling. But, he has provided a tool to calculate feed needs and lots of suggestions on heritage birds. If you're interested in that stuff, pm me and I'll send it over. I'm also happy to act as broker and run things by jeff based on your local environment if you like.:caf

I'd love to check it out of you feel like sending it my way :)

My original narri hen that was going on 5 years died this afternoon. She did a brood and I guess it took too much out of her.

Took 14 chickens to the auction today. Was not a sellers market. Market is screwed up when Rooster are bringing 2 to 3 dollars each more than laying hens.

Was gonna take a few poults but forgot boxes. Poults ranged from 18 ea. For narris and bourbons to 4 dollars for palms and sweetgrass.

Moved poults I have over to the big brooder. There were 51 that I moved. 10day to 2 days old. Placed 22 turkey eggs on lockdown. Plus 54 pheasant eggs, 100 quail. All these should hatch tues. So may have to get more brooders set up.

Had a mystery of my own sort of. Had 2 broody Turkey's on 8 chicken eggs. Kicked them off a week before hatch date. Had 8 chicken eggs and 2 turkey eggs. Hatch came about 1 lone chick. Let them set couple of days kicked them out so I could clean box. All the chicken eggs were gone and they were on 8 Turkey eggs. There was only one other hen in the pen and she used another box.

Been a messed up week for the most part my grandmother passed away thurs. Trying get arrangements taken care of and dealing with family that doesn't deal with loss to well kinda takes a toll.

Memphis: glad to hear you Annie and daisy had a good reunion after the dog show.

Jrnash: Good looking future dinners. Good luck on your upcoming hatches.

Rjohns: hope the one eggs keeps developing for you.

I'm so sorry for your loss :(

Everybody I did something dumb.... I let the broody with the Turkey poults out two days ago and they were fine. Weather was nice so i thought why not? Well the weather had a drastic change and was rainy and in the upper 30's today and the poults got chilled... I lost one of them and just lost the second now :hit I feel so freakin dumb. They were happy healthy poults that were running around picking bugs with mom last night.

I'm sorry to hear this. It happens sometimes though it doesn't make it any easier.

@duluthralphie, did you ever figure out what breed your mystery chick is?

Yesterday on Facebook, on the turkey color 101 page, someone had poults that looked similar to what Sprinkles looked like. I was so excited and wanted to get some hatching eggs from them. Then I found out they're in Europe :hit

I only have 1 week left on the wild turkey egg. It's still dancing around in the egg :)

I love dancing eggs! Well...off for a morning stroll with the girls. Annie is so funny. She walks right up to me, looks me in the eye & issues a pile of turkey gibberish. And Daisy is sticking tight just trilling away as if all is right in her world. I was gone longer than usual. My sitter is good, but no lap time or walks. I'm sure they feel abused. They are a bit e

My day gets better and better(NOT)
moving dirt to build up the elevation for the NEW chicken pen and inadvertently found a wild hive of peo'd honey bees. So far we are at the head butting stage. Trying to beat the monsoon!!!

JR Sorry to hear about your bees and other critter

Holm Sorry to hear about the poults

Ralph, love the avatar

And I almost became a chick murderer... Opened the hatcher today, found one very lively live chick (late comer) and what I thought were five dead eggs. None seemed to progress any further than the other day. all partially zipped. So I candled them all, no movement, no breathing (that I could see), so I put the live chick in the brooder and the five dead eggs into the compost bin. An hour or so later, my daughter-in-law reports the compost bin is chirping. Open the lid and there stands a soaking wet chick chirping away. He's now back in the hatcher and I'm paranoid.:hit:oops:

Memphis, glad you're back with the girls.
