A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

We have a 4th of July parade on our street each year. This year will be the 62nd parade. It's an amazing spectacle. Fire trucks, boy scout groups, cops on horses, floats, and every kid is riding a decorated bike or scooter. Even decorated dogs. Hundreds of folks. Folks that grew up here come back with their kids & now grandkids. We all decorate our houses. It's so cool! Tonight we had our neighborhood cookout. Everyone asked where the turkeys are. Daisy, being a renowned food thief, is banned from such affairs. But she & Annie will get lots of visitors tomorrow. Daisy will love it, Annie will grumble the whole time!

R2elk is there a reason some "bronze" Toms are nearly black and some brown?

I see pictures both ways. My favorite one (body wise) is black from the front but has the bronze marking on wings and tail... He was directly from Porters, I ended up with 3 from hs eggs, They all are blacker than I expected.

I even checked pictures on different sites to figure out if he was a bronze or a black of some kind. The hens are the nice bronze color I expected..

I will try to get a picture...
I have never seen a brown looking Bronze turkey. My first guess is that ones that look brown are most likely not pure Bronzes. Are you sure that the brownish ones aren't Red Bronzes?

A true Bronze should look fairly black in flat lighting but should be highly iridescent as the sun shines on it.

Hi, we just had a hatch of 10/12 of bourbon red and Royal palm. I was curious though for some of the chicks have the little "thing" (Sorry don't know the name) on there head and others don't. Is the normal?

If they are turkey poults, they all have a snood. At hatch the snood is not necessarily the same size or stage of development on all poults but it is there.

JR, at the risk of offending some of the others on this thread....those ducks are cuties!

Hey...where has Holm been??

I talked to Holm yesterday around noon. He is alive and well but real busy. He has been trying to get over here and pick up some toads and a few pullets for a few weeks now,but things keep popping up he has to do there.

During haying season it can be hard for him to get away his Grandpa really relies on him.

R2elk answered about the size but did not touch on the psychological implications of a small snood. A small snood can do untold damage to the turkey's mental health.

Small snooded turkeys will become obsessed with their small snood. They start wondering what is wrong with them, of course, we all know it's that they have a small snood.

Girl turkeys laugh at small snooded guys. Of course, they all say the same same thing Memphis told JR last week when he asked about snood size, "size doesn't matter". (of course, we all know it does or they wouldn't be asking)

Just remember the phrase "Size doesn't matter" Whenever one of you turkeys mentions snood size you say "size doesn't matter". Now we all know it does, but a young turkey is close to crazy to start with. Telling him he has a small snood could cause him to do dangerous pranks, removing the "danger gators" sign in areas a turkey with a large snood might go swimming in....

The other little know fact is only a small snooded turkey ever asks about snood size. Now you will often hear us talk about "snood pulling contests".
They are a real thing turkeys find it hard to pull their own snood to make it larger, so the small snooded turkey will spend hours with other small snooded turkeys and pull each others snoods. They will pull them to the point they are bloody and swollen. Turkeys are not all the smart.

Anyways, you now know the secret about snoods,

Have a happy 4th all.
