A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

This is why I installed a frost free hydrant before I built my coop and built the coop around it..

You might be surprised how often turkeys catch songbirds. When they do catch them, they normally kill them and play the keep away game just as they would with a mouse. The victim normally ends up as part of their food intake.
Remember my barred owl? Found his skeleton and feathers in the pasture the other day. Apparently it came back expecting to eat dinner and became an early morning snack.

My turkeys are weenie babies.. they spooked when a songbird flew over their run and now they're hiding in the coop.

Granted I did just clean and refill feeders and the waterer, plus I deeply spot cleaned the shavings and added 2 more bales so it's nice and warm and dry before the winter rains are upon us.

They did spot some trumpeter swans flying super high up and were all heads-cocked staring at the sky chittering at each other.

Question: what in bird's mouths makes their water dishes smell so foul? (didn't use fowl pun here ;) ) Like from the smallest canary to chickens/turkeys it can be not even 24 hours since changing water and it has that slimey stank beginning.

I'll wait to see what others say, but you're right on the mark... I have no idea, but first gallon of water goes to cleaning out the mess.

In my opinion, fresh is better than frozen. I no longer freeze any of my poultry. I process at least 3 days before intended use.
That is what I am planning to do as well. My niece, who is cooking the turkey for out "tribe" wants to the turkey 2 days before Thanksgiving. So I was trying to figure out the whole timing factor.

Edited to add: It will be our first time having fresh, home grown turkey!

I wonder if people who add ACV have less of that funky odor? I'm assuming it's a bacterial growth from the murky slime feel of it. I use a plastic waterer so I could try ACV and see if it helps.

Also... daylight savings is nearing. Everyone loves leaving and coming home in total dark, right? Ugh

Hey gang got a quick question about one of our Chickens. I know this is the turkey section but you all seem to know about chicken as well. I have a blue large fowl Cochin hen who is over all very healthy. I noticed a bald spot on her chest/neck area about 2 weeks ago. Figured it was just a normal feather pulling incident but today I noticed it isn’t really even starting to grow back yet and the skin there seems thick and yellow instead of the normal whitish flesh color. Also the skin around her face is turning yellowish. Still acting normal-eating and drinking great. Hasn’t layed in awhile but neither have the other hens. Any ideas?
