A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Lately my turkeys have been butts about going in the coop at night. They start to and then one of the dang guineas starts screaming and they run out/around right before I can shut the door or I get half in half out of the coop. I learned yesterday if I make a perfect raven call (yes I make bird calls with my mouth) they spook and run into the coop quietly, single file. :woot

Have your turkeys been talking to mine? Please, check their cell phones and delete my turkeys numbers. I have this fight constantly. Do not give in to them. About 15 minutes before dark run them inside. They will get use to it..

Of course, once a week or so one will challenge the bedtime rule..Good luck

I find if it’s almost dark and I turn on the lightbulb I have inside their coop it’s made it much easier. Presumably because they can see inside and know there’s nothing terrifying. I did change out their feeder for a larger one (was tired of filling/hauling it daily in the rainy weather) and also we had guests wanting to watch the birds (which I expect 5 extra people staring is enough to make any bird spook).

5 extra people is enough to make them want to stay up late and visit, or have a beer or two...They are just too darn social.

I have 2 eggs turkey eggs to hatch now. I am not putting them in until the 5th..I have a couple that are 5-7 days old now, I might give them a try too,,What the heck!

January Turkeys in Minnesota would be so cool,,,If they are a recognized variety, I might even show them because of the age they would have on others around here.....

Ralph...you should show the turkeys. What fun!

It would be if they are good enough. And not a mixed breed mutt. Either way I will be happy. Showing turkeys is a lot of work, and I would have to spend days reading the SOP and talking to turkey show people........ALSO time is at a premium..

Your right Ralph....showing anything is a ton of work & time. I find grooming my turkeys easier than my chickens. I would love to see turkeys be contenders at these shows.

As much as I like showing birds, mine or a turkey will never be Show Champion.
The champion spot always seem to go to the flashy breeds. Something that is "popular" amongst the fad chasers.

I have "old breeds" that are not popular. I have breeds where only a couple people show them. Chanticler, Speckled Sussex, Dominiques have no chance to be there.
The legbars might in the future depending on how popular they become. However, by the time they are at that point, I will be resting in peace...
