A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

She always let me walk up reach under her, check her eggs. roll them over. Inspect them for cracks and poop. clean them and so on.. BUT then I treated her with love and respect.. I would sit and listen to her complaints and concerns, and promise to make her life better for her..

All she wanted was a little understanding and comfort..I think you failed to reach the proper intimacy with her she desired. Try listening to them next time. They just like to vent and see you do small things for them...like clean and roll the eggs...

I couldn't get close enough to see her eggs let alone roll them! Unless she was outside for food but I'll be darned if I would want to be checking her eggs when she decides to come back inside!

One must extrude confidence when dealing with large broody birds, or their base nature will make mincemeat of your face and body...:lau:lau:lau:lau:lau

Actually I have been chased for a quite a distance for the crime of just getting too close to a turkey hen and her nest or babies. I had one that would run 20 yards to chase a person if she saw them. They can be a tad fickle.

Well, my flatbed truck may have turkey poo on the bed, but at least the turkeys won't get eaten by coyotes.... (the stake-rack on my truck makes a good turkey roost)

Lately my turkeys have been butts about going in the coop at night. They start to and then one of the dang guineas starts screaming and they run out/around right before I can shut the door or I get half in half out of the coop. I learned yesterday if I make a perfect raven call (yes I make bird calls with my mouth) they spook and run into the coop quietly, single file. :woot

My young turkeys still go into a shelter but not the big teens or adults. They do ok for themselves. I was on a thread yesterday where they were talking about DNR fining folks who have birds of prey feathers. I'd be in deep trouble... Last time an owl tried to get a free meal in my pasture, he became the meal. Turkey's seemed to enjoy him as nothing left but bones and feathers.
