here are my two that were hatched nov 1st.I think I have a jake and a jenny ( is that the right terms)??

Saw the owl up close & personal yesterday evening. Was getting towards turkey tuck in time & I was sitting in the yard with Daisy in my lap. It soared right over us about 15 feet above us. Daisy saw it first. All birds ran for cover. It landed in the oak closest to my house. Only about 12 feet above ground. I hopped up and ran toward it. It just watched me for a bit. Actually stretched a wing out, rather casually. Finally it flew over to a neighbors backyard tree. I walked toward it & it flew off to a big magnolia. That's when I realized I was running around chasing it with fat/heavy Daisy still tucked under my arm. So I penned my girls. I'm wondering if it's hunting in my yard & nesting in the magnolia. I need to figure that out. I was impressed with it size. Definately a Barred Owl. No idea of sex. Fully mature bird. A good 24 inches tall. Beautiful feathers....saw that when it stretched out a wing. And silent in the air. Completely silent. It amazes me that you can't hear owls fly especially the big ones.

Put down the turkey before running........I think that is rule number 14 in turkey raising....

Turkeys rank up there on the stupid animal list. We are having frozen pellets falling from the ski day. Not snow, not hail but frozen pellets.

I ran out during a break in the weather and opened the coop door. The Turkeys came out. When the frozen pellets started falling again, they were running in circles and trying to figure out how to make them stop or get out from under them. They tried under my truck, They are too tall for that to work. They tried to get under the deck, I have that blocked with lattice so they can't. They ran to the shed, but something was not right about that. They ran back to the truck, it was still too short to crawl under.

Finally one of them ran into the coop, they all followed. Life was good for about 3 minutes. It stopped dropping pellets and out they came. 5 minutes later it started in again. Same actions. I think they are doing drugs or something, they could not remember to go back into the coop....

Of course my Blue slate was not involved in this nonsense. He is too busy strutting for the girls that are behind two sets of electric wire and he will never get too....ijiots!

You know Ralph....Daisy & I were so freaked out I just clutched her to me & ran. Poor bird. I'll try to remember to drop her next time. She was doing that high pitch whine...Probably cause we were running toward the owl.
Poor turkeys....ice pellets! Had them all perklemphed!

Owl returned mid morning. Heard the turkeys even while in the house. Blue jays were screaming and I saw it sitting in one of my pecan trees. After research, I'm thinking it's hunting during the day to feed babies. But I don't know. Females are bigger...this thing is huge...might be a girl. I was able to get pretty close to it before it flew to the magnolia. I finally saw it , so we just stared at each other awhile. I tried to explain how squirrel fur had more protein than chicken feathers. Apparently it will eat birds as large as a grouse. No idea what a grouse is. I'll have to look that up too. I left it sitting there...watching...waiting. It a beautiful bird. But I swear it had a smerk on its face...

well, here is where he convent doesn't help. Barred owls are terrified of my toms, especially after they ate one. A few months ago I had a great horned owl take out one of my RP junior hens, but the hen put up a terrific fight from all the feathers left behind. A barred owl or great horned can easily take out a full sized chicken. Ducks are also easy prey... But turkey's can fight back and are generally bigger.
