A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Saturday i put some eggs in the bator and some in a nest in the turkey pen. I figured maybe we will get a few poults at least one way or another. Yesterday someone turned all of the coop eggs TWICE but added their daily deposit in the reg nest... except for one who left her prize right outside the pen door..which ended up under my foot. Ugh. the nest spot is bout four foot away from reg layin nest. I figured this way if someone does take the bait we can cage it off for her but still keep the reg layin spot. At least this is what my human brain is thinkin.... a lady may have an altogether different decision. This mornin hubby said they were turned so the x wasn’t atop any eggs like they were when we put everyone away for the night.

Humph! Went to put everyone to bed tonight and one of the ladies didnt come a runnin. So i go lookin. She is layin on the ground and a poof of feathers. she has done somethin to one of her legs... she wont put much weight on it at all. And def not enough to carry herself. I guess while she was incapacitated thanksgivin took that as an invite to do his thang. She has one very very small puncture right in between her wings but nothin else. I put her in the hay room with food and water where she doesnt have to move to get it and i went up bout an hour ago to check on her. She is sleepin peacefully... yes sleepin cause i heard her makin happy coos. And tonight of all nights the mister is at his sleep study to get fitted for a cpap... so me and my evil back had hustle this fatty to her sleepin spot. No fun at all! Tomorrow we will decide what we need do with her. I dunno which is the better option.... let her stay in the hay room a few days and see what happens.... or cull..... her foot and hip arent tender. I was able to move both and her toes all around . She did not like me messin right above her knee but the knee wasnt swollen either nothin was. :barnie

Sorry to hear about your hens injury. Whether to cull or not would be up to you and your hens condition.
But they are pretty resilient as far as healing from injuries. I would personally give her a few days to see if she starts to put weight on her leg and use it.

@sfgwife I'd wait at least a day or so and see how she's doing. Then make a decision for her.

We have a bit of an injury here too though I'm not exactly sure what it is. Tommy is holding his one wing oddly, almost a little droopy but droopy from the shoulder, nowhere else. He left me mess with it to check it out and I moved it all around. He didn't act like it was hurting him at all but it's still droopy. I don't think it really feels dislocated but I don't know. I'll be watching it closely. I've decided not to cull him. I sold a few bourbon red poults the other day and the guy was telling me that they're still very much in demand and that he'd been trying to find them locally without much luck at all. Even Rural King has a back order for them. I had thought that I'd swamped the area with them over the past couple years but I guess not.

The broody bug is hitting my turkeys hard this year I think. Pebbles has started her annual, "I'm going to sit here till I starve" thing again and the past couple days, Mary has been sitting there with her. Even Cuddles looks like she's considering it, spending longer and longer in her "nest" (the corner of the poop board) and making whiney noises. I've never had this much broodiness in the turkey coop at the same time.

Thanks to you amd @Auroradream26 ... i always lean toward waitin a few days i just dont want her to be miserable bad is all. Most likely we will wait a few days and see. Paul can decide when he gets home in the mornin i think on this one. It has just been a dumb few days for stupid stuff round here anyway. So i am full up on hard decisions at the moment. :/.

I’d give her a few days to recouperate if she isn’t suffering much.

Had some turkey egg and sausage scramble for dinner. Have 13 eggs sitting in a tray in our cold bathroom awaiting extra eggs to fill up the incubator.

The bourbon reds are definitely in high demand here too! Already have a waiting list for poults and I haven’t even advertised.

Got our very first egg from our girl darlin today:woot

also hatched 7 out of 8 eggs over the weekend.... the hatching eggs come from a co-worker.... one died but the others look good!

Sooo my eggs I have awaiting the incubator I’ve been rotating them 1-2 times a day (sitting in a box with holes in it to keep them fat side up and I tip it at varying angles/sides) and have them in the coldest room of the house (stays around 58-62). Is this correct protocol? Gathering 10-12 days worth and not washing them.

Sfgwife....give her a bit of time. Like Freeman said, they are pretty resilient.

Had the girls out front for their bedtime snack. Walked down my neighbors driveway to give them some eggs. Heard Annie yapping. Figured they didn't notice me walk off. Yelled for them, no turkeys, but steady yapping. Walked back around front....car at curb...passenger side door open....young boy sitting in yard with Daisy on his lap. Mom waiting patiently behind the wheel. Neighbors. She said he gets so excited to see the turkeys he practically hopped out of the moving car. I have visions of all these kids telling their grandkids about growing up with a crazy turkey lady in their neighborhood.....

Sounds like what you are doing with them is good.
Your incubator should be in today and you ordered the genesis?
