A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I thought my hens were moulting bad before.... wowee I have one nearly bald on her rump! The others are near bald in random spots. I’m giving them some 30% protein feed for a week or so to hopefully get them feathered up before it gets cold and rainy this fall.

Have some eggs still going in the incubator with poorer results it seems but figured I’d get no hatches if I didn’t try at all... one little started pipping today.

Been busy canning... peaches, pears, cucumbers, and apples. So far 85 jars canned and haven’t even gotten to pear butter, apple butter, blackberry/peach/pear jams, and apple pie filling... oi vey!

Every time I add supplemental light, it takes about a month or two to kick start them. I'm usually getting my first eggs of the season in January/February.
I get similar results. I start supplemental lighting in December statement start gathering in January to have poults by February for the fair.

Should also mention I got a large dog crate for only $20 so saved myself the hassle of building an introduction pen for the new hen... here’s to hoping they eventually get along, lol.
Hey, is your avatar a Mastiff? I've been thinking about getting one of those when my old boxer dog goes.

Poor Sweet Pea is molting hard :( Her feathers seem to have vanished overnight!

I managed to get a few new pictures of Phil tonight. He has new feathers growing in. They're going to have such a shine on the tips!

Yes, she’s a 16 week old English Mastiff. Easiest laid back puppy I’ve had, has her moments of being a brat though... but so does any puppy, lol.

Last puppy shots were today. She likes riding shotgun, lol.

On a turkey related note the new (albeit wild) hen is now in her crate inside the coop. Hopefully they can get used to her presence without too much butt whooping.

Do any of you feed extra protein while they are growing out new feathers? If so...what?

I feed 24% turkey and game starter whenever I have turkeys molting. Also when I have young poults.

Sugarberry is my only adult turkey now. And she looks like she has started her molt. Good thing, because after brooding those eggs, she was looking just AWFUL! I've had her and the babies on 24% since they hatched 3 weeks ago, so that will work out real well. They are separated, so I don't have to put all my chickens on 24% this year. (Chickens are on 20% while they molt, and if I can get everyone to finish molting before spring, then I will switch to 16% layer feed. Assuming I have any layers in the winter. )

Edited because my finger hit post in the middle of a word.
