A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I plant trees and shrubbery that can tolerate the soil, water and climate conditions. I keep trying different varieties until I find something that works. I had a well drilled and run it 24 hours per day x 7 days per week in order to keep the plants alive. I initially started with American plums, Russian Elms, Lilacs, Hackberry trees, Rocky Mountain Junipers, Nanking Cherries, Blue Spruce, prune type plums and Russian Olives. The Russian Olives have now been declared a noxious weed so the state could pay a politician's buddy to remove them on public lands. Now they provide him with free (government paid) advertising for his tree removal service.

I am slowly replacing the Russian Olives with Greenspire Lindens. They survived the nasty fall and winter that killed off the Russian Elms. The start of the grass was dry land pasture mix which since has had a number of other grasses added such as annual and perennial rye and even a batch of Buffalo grass.

I am working to add Yellow Chokecherries since they can actually be harvested without interference from the birds. The Evans Bali cherry trees also easily survived the killer fall and winter without any damage and produced a nice crop of cherries.

The abundant tree, shrubs and grass roots have greatly helped hold moisture in the sand. The falling leaves have contributed to the slow creation of 1/2" of actual topsoil that was not here 30 years ago.
Yep, his yard looks very organized and tidy. It's an emerald gem in the desert prairie. My poultry would be jealous of the bird housing if they knew. My birds get converted sheds and haybarn corners.

Had to get Jesse to run the wild hen off this morning. She doesn't run off when me or my kids go out there, so I can chase her all I want to no avail. My husband walks out there and she runs. She has been really harassing my chickens and my turkey hen the last few days. Enough already.

I may need to cull Boyde too. He has been trying to mount chickens and I have no separate area to put him in. I never planned to keep turkeys, so never built a separate area. I have plans for a new, better coop and new yard for them, but it's not going to happen overnight. Too bad I don't have a dog kennel or something. :(

You could try putting him outside the pen during the daytime.

I may do that this week. My husband hates how he follows us around, but he's gone all week. I don't mind it.
Turkeys follow because they think they are dogs....Just rename Boyde to Rover or Bowser and the DH will be happy. Maybe he can gun train him to retrieve.

Or...have Aurora make you a fur saddle & maybe your husband won't notice hes not a dog. I love my turkeys hanging out! They follow me everywhere.

I'm in Missouri. At the coonhound show site. Registration starts at 5. Hunting at 8. Nice weather. Little chilly. Muddy from rain. I'm nervous having never done this before. My coonhound is sleeping. He was all cranked to be with like kind! Happy to see other dogs with big ears! Lots of different coonhounds here. My dog fell in love with a cutie Redbone. She seemed smitten too. Fun to talk about dogs with these guys. They are very helpful with novice folks. Most of them actually hunt beside these events where they just spot raccoons. So lots of gun talk that goes over my head. Wish us luck. I'm just hoping I can stumble through the woods at night without breaking something!!
