A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I pulled 4 Sweetgrass poults out from under the unauthorized incubator this morning. Apparently the 2 assisted hatches made it fine. Unfortunately she still has 18 more eggs under her. I am not looking forward to trying to candle them to see if they are still viable.

I already have too many poults.

First try and figure out just what exactly is going on. It is not uncommon for a hen to remove a broken egg from her nest (lots of different reasons for broken eggs) and take it a distance away and drop or eat it. Those cases do not equal egg eating hen that must be dealt with. However there are cases where a hen can become a true egg eater that will steal and eat eggs from nests. A true egg eater, in my opinion, is best eliminated by a dinner invitation.

She will run out into the pen, lay her egg, then turn around and eat it.... I can’t tell which hen it is since about 3 look exactly the same, lol. If I catch her doing it again she may go into a dog kennel and see if my egg production goes up again.

Sounds like a dedicated egg eater.

When I have multiple hens that look alike, I use the colored cable ties as leg bands so I can tell them apart. Some hens get adept at removing them causing the need to re band them from time to time.

Here are some of your girls’ progeny, R2. Just a couple days ago. I’m so very glad and grateful I got them. SO cute and energetic. Happy little cheepers. They get bigger and livelier every day.

The ones that you left behind are off of heat now and are sleeping on the roosts.

I’ve got the heating pad turned off. I’m just leaving it in because they like to hide under & behind it and sit on it. It’s pretty toasty in the garage regardless. They’ll get the meaties’ tractor in a few weeks. Actually I may put them in the small chicken coop first. They’d probably like that...

Good to know that I am not the only one with too many turkeys

I think there are only 10 mature hens and 3 mature males.... one smaller Jake that will be invited to dinner, 4 that are a couple months old, 3 that are about a month old and 5 or so that sre 1 to 2 weeks old....

I offered to help a gal I know by trading her a couple hens for a bb tom she has that should be processed soon.... she decided I was trying to take advantage of her and declined.... and turned around and offered to sell me some smaller toms, that I had given her in exchange for eggs earlier this summer... smh I dont need any more I was just being nice.
