A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I just realized that I never have an update! My hen that was sick. She was too the point where there was no meat left on her bones and she struggled to keep her balance.... she's made a full recovery! Her muscle mass is returning and she's back out with the flock like there was never an issue (she had a saddle on now lol)

My daughter's Pineapple is out with the flock now and is quite the turd. He loves attention but is the master of the sneak bite. Blackberry and Blueberry are in the broody cage that's in the turkey coop, learning their new home. Blueberry still has some weird issue with his one leg where it goes straight out behind him some times. I believe that we'll probably raise him up and eat him but we'll see. Maybe he'll find a pet home somewhere. Strawberry had to be put down unfortunately. She had wry issues that just would not correct both in her neck and her legs. It was very weird. Blueberry and Strawberry have been the only poults all year to be born with strange issues.

Pebbles is STILL broody. I've been kicking her off the nest every day to go eat but she's been broody now for what, 2 months, maybe 3? I gave her a few silke eggs that DD forgot to collect and that had started developing. We'll see what happens.

I completely cleaned out the turkey coop last week and got all of the old, nasty, glued together straw out and all poop boards scraped to perfection and dumped bag after bag of shavings in there. I think they really like the shavings. It's so nice and clean in there now lol

Here is a few pictures of my little poult. My son wants to name it Ruger if its a male or Beretta if it's a female. Lol. He and his daddy are big gun collectors. He/she is a month old. We have it on a wire bottom with some chicks that are around the same age. I know raising a poult with chicks isn't ideal but it was the only poult that hatched.

One of my poults has a weak neck and can’t lift its head. It has been 2 days since it hatched and the mom rejected it. I’m not sure how to help the neck get stronger. I have been helping it drink vitamin water, but it can’t eat. I am a little concerned that she is starting to get Wry neck, as today she has it drawn to one side only. I’m lost and could really use some help. She sleeps most the time, but started peeping more today then she has been. She also can’t lift her weight on her legs. They both work, but it’s almost like they are uneven. This causes her to always roll on to her back when she tries to stand.

Thanks!
DC

I know you don't want to hear this but I would have already culled it.

Finnie!!! Where the heck have you been?? Miss ya !
Thanks, Memphis!
I’ve been (unsuccessfully) avoiding the internet as much as possible in hopes of getting outdoor work done while it’s not winter. That’s not going very well. So I seem to go a couple of weeks in between visits to BYC, and then I find it impossible to catch up. I usually scan the first couple pages and the last couple pages of you-all’s new posts. :D

Really cute poult!

I always raised my poults and chicks together. But you do have to be prepared to separate them when they reach sexual maturity, because toms will smash pullets and hens, and jennies will mercilessly attack the wounded. In fact, I sold my last two (female) turkeys because I was tired of my chickens getting hurt. I loved free range turkeys, and I felt sad seeing them penned up.

If I ever see Sweetgrass turkeys available, I will probably get some again.

The Blue Slate hen came off of her nest today. There were 4 eggs left behind. One was rotten, one was a late quitter, one was internally pipped and one was externally pipped. The last two are in the hatcher.

She had the Sweetgrass poult that i had let her keep and Two Tri-Color Mottled Slate poults. I ducked under her as she jumped at me as I grabbed poults. Based on the scratch on my arm, she must have gotten me after all.

Her hatch is currently at 17 and may increase to 19 if the two in the hatcher make it. There are currently 11 Sweetgrass, 2 Tri-Color Mottled Blacks and 4 Tri-Color Mottled Slates in her hatch.

I used the poults to lure her back into the coop. I added her little ones to the brooder and took out the 5 that are almost 2 weeks old and gave them to her. The last I saw, she plans on adopting them even though they don't look the right size to her. She had them in a corner behind her.
